High Point Wins 2020 Men's Indoor Track & Field Championship

BLACKSBURG, Va. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – The High Point men’s track & field team won its first Big South Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship Saturday, as the Panthers finished the two-day meet with 178 points. 

Campbell finished second in a close second with 121 points, while Hampton stood third with 108 points. Charleston Southern finished the meet with 79 points, followed by UNC Asheville in fifth with 60 points. USC Upstate is in sixth with 49 points, Gardner-Webb finished in seventh with 44 points, and Winthrop finished in eighth with 23 points..

FINAL RESULTS

Campbell’s Athanas Kioko was voted Most Valuable Athlete of the Year while Hampton’s Dylan Beard was selected as Most Outstanding Performer of the Championship. UNC Asheville’s Isaac Teasley earned Freshman of the Year honors, and High Point’s Mike Esposito was voted Coach of the Year.

Winthrop’s Jalen Hodges claimed the day’s first win, with a height of 2.08m in the high jump. Campbell’s Athanas Kioko went on to take the first track final of the day in the 1-mile run with a time of 4:08.50. The first win for Hampton on the day came from defending champion Dylan Beard with his time of 7.86 in the 60-meter hurdles. Gardner-Webb’s Chase Thornhill crossed the finish-line first in the 400 meters with a time of 47.77.

Camel Curtis Carr paced the 60-meter sprint for the second year in a row as he crossed the line in 6.71. Pablo Romero won his fourth straight heptathlon title at the Big South Indoor Championships with 5,282 points. Teammates Gabriel Stainback followed him with 4,534 points, and Benjamin Johnsen rounded out the top three with 4,353 points. Last year second place finisher in the 800 meters, Siro Pina Cardona of High Point took the crown this year with a time of 1:53.08. Charleston Southern’s Timothy Davis took his second straight triple jump title with a jump of 15.22m.

Jared Henderson of USC Upstate took the 200 meter title with a run of 21.23. Charleston Southern Buccaneer JP Caglione won the title in the weight throw for the second straight year with his mark of 19.25m. Athanas Kioko finished first in the 3,00 meter race with a time of 8:33.20. The meet concluded with the 4x400 Meter Relay, which was won by UNC Asheville’s Joel Bowers, Tryee McFalling, Bryson Riddick, Isaac Teasley with a time of 3:15.42
