Gardner-Webb Women’s Swimming Downs College of Charleston 190-110 BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's swim team defeated College of Charleston by a 190-110 score in a two-day meet that took place Friday and Saturday on the campus of Gardner-Webb University.
The weekend meet was highly successful for the Lady Bulldogs, as twelve different swimmers earning victories, with Rachel Warkentin and Corey Hughey leading the way for the team, with each being awarded first place in four events.
On Friday evening, the Lady Bulldogs were victorious in seven events. The team of Sarah Steadman, Corey Hughey, Stepheni Stadnik and Jenna Voelkert were victorious in the 400 yard medley relay with a time of 4:04.92. Katherine Glenn won the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 10:49.86. Rachel Warkentin timed in quickest in the 100 yard breaststroke at 1:07.51, and the 400 yard IM at 4.36.05. Victoria Bryant was victorious in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 1:02.57. Corey Hughey timed in quickest in the 50 yard freestyle at 24.00. The team of Kim Zachensky, Rachel Warkentin, Jenna Voelkert, and Liz VanHalsema won the 200 yard freestyle relay, timing in at 1:40.04.
Saturday afternoon was another good day for Gardner-Webb as the team timed in fastest in nine events. The team of Stephanie Wild, Kim Zachensky, Corey Hughey and Hillary Leonard won the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:51.94. Sarah Steadman won the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 2:09.45. Lizzy Ketterer won the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:11.39. Corey Hughey timed in quickest in the 100 yard freestyle at 54.17, and the 100 yard butterfly at 1:00.57. Rachel Warkentin won the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:12.86. Katherine Glenn timed in quickest in the 200 yard freestyle at 1:57.36. Stepheni Stadnik was fastest in the 200 yard breaststroke at 2:29.17. The team of Rachel Warkentin, Kim Zachensky, Sarah Mathis, and Lizzy Ketterer had the fastest time in the 400 yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:57.58.
The Lady Bulldogs will return to action on January 30th as they host Davidson College. The meet is set to take place at 1:00 PM at the Gardner-Webb Aquatics Center.
Eagles Overwhelm FIU in Regular Season Finale FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU swimming & diving team ended the 2009-10 regular season with another convincing win, defeating Florida International 194-94 Saturday at the FGCU Aquatics Center. The Eagles have now won nine consecutive dual meets, each by at least 65 points.
FGCU’s “B” team captured first place in the day’s first event, the 200 medley relay, finishing in 1:49.93, just ahead of FGCU’s “D” team (1:54.52). The Eagles also swam well in the only other relay event of the day, the 200 free relay, in which FGCU’s “A” team took first in 1:39.03, followed by FGCU’s “B” team (1:39.24).
The Eagles dominated the freestyle events, winning all five races, including sweeps of the top three positions in the 50 free, 200 free, and 1000 free. Margie Chamberlin (Land ‘O Lakes, Fla.) won the 50 free in 25.32, followed closed by Isabela Mills (Rio de Janeiro, Brazel) and Shannon Blizzard (Jacksonville, Fla.). FGCU’s Vicky Cadge (Long Melford, Suffolk, United Kingdom) won the 200 free, edging out Teri Lytle (Melbourne, Fla.) and Leah Daniel (Winnipeg, Manitoba).
Viktoria Hyddmark (Lund, Sweden) captured both backstroke events, winning the 100 back in 59.36 and the 200 back in 2:04.63. FGCU also captured victories in both breaststroke events, with Myriam Plante (Sainte-Foy, Quebec) winning the 100 breast in 1:07.08 and Regina Rodriguez (Mexico City, Mexico) taking the 200 breast in 2:26.32. The Eagles swept the butterfly events, with Alessandra Cianci (Plantation, Fla.) placing first in the 200 fly in 2:07.77 and Cadge winning the 100 fly in 57.74.
In the diving competitions, Karmin McNamara (Tampa, Fla.) won the 3-meter diving with a score of 281.18 and placed second in the 1-meter diving with 253.28 points. FIU’s Namiko Shibata won the 1-meter competition with a score of 264.75.
The Eagles will have almost a month to prepare for their final competition of the season, the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Championships, where they will look to repeat as conference champions. The Blue and Green will travel to Knoxville, Tenn. for the meet, which will be held at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center on the campus of the University of Tennessee. The championships begin on Thursday, February 18, and wrap up on Saturday, February 20.
Wildcats Sweep Dual Meet Competition in Final Home Meet of Season DAVIDSON, N.C. -- In what could be a preview for next month's CCSA Championships, the Davidson Wildcat women won 13 of 16 events to defeat four league foes in dual meet competition Saturday afternoon at Cannon Natatorium in their final home meet of the 2009-10 season.
The Wildcats defeated Campbell (192-83), Georgia Southern (174-119), N.C. A&T (210.50-60.50) and Radford (207-79).
On senior day, Linnea Buttermore was one of four multiple event winners for the Wildcats. Buttermore, honored in pre-meet festivities along with classmates Kelsey Chisholm, Caroline Curtiss, Caitlin Sheetz, Brad Carman and Miller Williams, won both the 1- and 3-meter diving events with scores of 244.25 and 256.35, respectively. Chisholm finished second on the 1-meter with a score of 237.35 and third on the 3-meter with a score of 230.45.
Lady Bison Notch First Victory of the Season on Senior DayWASHINGTON, D.C. - With enthusiasm resonating throughout the pool, the Howard Bison celebrated Senior Day by putting on an excellent show in the water. Hosting Mt. St. Mary's, St. Peter's and VMI for their lone home meet of the season, the Bison recorded many personal best times with the women's squad notching their first victory of the season, a 146-48 win over VMI.
The women dropped two narrow decisions to Mt. St. Mary's (131-112) and St. Peter's (130-114) with the men's team falling short to St. Peter's and VMI - 187-73 and 152-106, respectively. Chelsea Andrews successful freshmen season continued with four victories. She began her afternoon with a dominant effort in the 200 freestyle, a 1:58.43, better than seven seconds from the competition. Andrews also took first place honors in the 100 freestyle with a 54.53 and another victory in the 100 butterfly at 1:01.39.
Andrews anchored the triumphant 800 freestyle relay, too. Teaming-up with fellow freshman E'lan Brewer, sophomore Cachanda Evans and senior Polo Edwards, the Lady Bison cruised to victory with a time of 8:25.50. Brewer also saw the winner's circle for the second time in her career. Her 25.93 was her best dual-meet time this season, just ahead of on-coming Paige Chenet of Mt. St. Mary's. Brewer's anchor 50 freestyle in the 200 medley relay to commence the meet propelled the Lady Bison to yet another relay victory. With freshman Summer Davis, senior Alyssa Rogers, and Evans the Howard Women charged to a time of 1:55.31. Seniors Rogers and Edwards celebrated their final meet in Burr with two second place finishes. Rogers came in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes, with times of 1:10.77 and 2:35.69, respectively. Edwards looked terrific in her distance freestyle events, going 11:22.02 in her 1000 freestyle and 5:31.53 in the 500 freestyle.
"I was really proud of the Lady Bison this afternoon," said head coach Matt Salerno. "They have continued to grow as a group and it's fantastic when that hard work and progress is rewarded with a victory."
On the men's side, freshman Zadok Isaacs earned his second victory in two days, this time in the 200 backstroke. Isaacs final 100 of the race propelled him to victory with a time of 2:00.82. The freshmen also swam hard in the 100 butterfly, earning him a second-place finish with a 54.75.
Senior Brad Worrell brought in a second place finish in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:52.16. Isaacs and Worrell combined with juniors Charles Canady and Damjan Strbac for the Bison's second place 800 freestyle relay, posting a combined time of 7:37.53.
Kelvin Goodman also notched a second place race in the 100 breaststroke. His superb effort got him a season-best time of 1:05.47.
Next week, the Bison will conclude their regular season by traveling to Georgetown for a 1PM contest against the Hoyas.
VMI Women’s Swimming and Diving Competes at Howard Quad WASHINGTON, D.C. - The VMI women's swimming & diving team dropped three decisions in its final regular season event, falling to Howard, St. Peter's and Mount St. Mary's at a quad-meet held at Howard's Burr Gymnasium on Saturday.
The Keydets were defeated by the host Lady Bison, 146-48, by St. Peter's, 190-43, and by Mount St. Mary's, 204-31. The team's top finish came from junior Briana Allard, who won the one-meter diving with a score of 143.25.
Junior Chelsea Nugent placed sixth in both the 100 backstroke (1:11.23) and the 50 freestyle (28.76). Senior Ateala Tuff also placed sixth in the 1000 yard freestyle (14:27.69), as did freshman Pin-Fen Chen also placed sixth in the 200 backstroke (2:43.18). The foursome of Chen, Tuff, Nugent and Sarah Rushton placed fifth in the 200 medley relay, swimming a 2:15.73.
The VMI women's swimming & diving team returns to action at the CCSA Championships, being held Feb. 18-20 at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center in Knoxville, Tenn.

Swimming Defeats North Carolina A&T, 155-36 BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell's swimming team (5-10, 4-4 CCSA) had a strong start to the second half of the season with a 155-36 victory over North Carolina A&T on Friday afternoon at the Johnson Natatorium. The Camels were able to win all 11 events on the afternoon and had a total of 25 top three finishes. The Camels started the meet and won the 200 medley relay. The team of junior Kelly Mullican, seniors Kara Gerdeman, Mary Beth Dellinger and Jackie Kenline swam a 1:54.58. The freshmen team of Devin Dorough, Emma Eisler, Magda Kedracka and Kaitlyn Tunstall finished second with a their time of 1:54.71. Campbell's team of sophomores Caitlin Ives, Missy Eller, Cameron Gorse and Kristen Chavis finished third in their time of 2:07.98.
Sophomore Leona Sola won the 1,000 free (11:53.99). Fellow sophomore Libby Sanderson placed second in the same event (12:09.04). Sanderson also finished second in the 500 free (5:55.02).
Gorse won the 200 free (2:02.92). Gerdeman was able to place second in the event (2:04.23), while freshman Michelle Key was third (2:09.31). Key also won the 500 free for Campbell (5:45.75).
Junior Ashlyn Stumpf was the winner of the 50 free (24.89). Dorough finished third (26.62).
Junior Casey Umberger was the victor in the 200 IM (2:16.67), finished second in the 100 fly (1:00.66) and won the title in the 100 breast (1:10.66).
Kedracka won the 100 fly in a Campbell season-best time of 1:00.43.
Kenline won the 100 free (54.49). Stumpf finished as the runner-up (54.90) for Campbell.
Tunstall was able to win the 100 back (1:04.05). Key took the title in the 500 free (5:45.75).
The team of Mullican, Gerdeman, Dellinger and Kenline finished the meet the same way as they started it with a win. The team was able to claim the victory in the 200 free (1:44.24). The Camels will continue the busy week and head off to Davidson, N.C. to take on Davidson on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 1 p.m. The meet will be the final team competition before the CCSA Championships from Feb. 19-20.
Edwards, Andrews, Isaacs Triumphant against ColonialsWASHINGTON, D.C. - The Howard women's and men's swimming and diving teams traveled across the District to face the Colonials of George Washington on Friday evening. The Bison continue to impress in the water, but the Colonials depth proved to be too much for the visitors as the men fell 91-78 with the women dropping the contest 91-71.
Leading the charge was senior captain Polo Edwards. Edwards' fantastic surge in the beginning of her 200 freestyle propelled her to victory with a time of 2:00.66. Edwards was also integral in the victory in the 200 freestyle relay. Combined with freshmen Chelsea Andrews, E'lan Brewer and sophomore Cachanda Evans, the Lady Bison scorched the oncoming eight Colonials with an impressive 1:41.89 - their best relay split of the season.
Edwards also placed second in her 100 backstroke with a 1:10.21.
Andrews, too, was triumphant for the Lady Bison. The freshman stormed past the competition from the start on her way to a first-place time of 53.72, more than four seconds ahead of the field. Andrews also swam her first 1000 freestyle of her college career and did quite well, posting a time of 11:23.93, good for fourth place.
On the men's side, Zadok Isaacs recorded his first collegiate victory in very exciting fashion. The freshmen's fabulous final 50 brought him to the finish with a winning time of 49.35. Isaacs also scored fourth place points for the Bison in the 200 IM with a time of 2:05.17. To conclude the meet, the Isaacs joined sophomore Steven Lott, junior Damjan Strbac and senior Brad Worrell for an exciting second place finish in the 200 freestyle relay. Isaacs lead-off relay split of 22.62 was his best for the season as the men completed the race in a time of 1:30.20.
The Bison are back in the water today and, for the only time this season, at home for Senior Day. Ceremonies begin at 11:45AM with the competition beginning and 12PM.
