Eagles Sweep Georgia Southern Quad Meet

STATESBORO, Ga. – The FGCU swimming & diving team swept the field at the Georgia Southern quad meet, defeating CCSA foes Georgia Southern, Gardner-Webb, and North Florida. With the three wins, the Eagles improve to 11-3 overall and a perfect 6-0 in CCSA competition, the second straight season FGCU has finished undefeated in the CCSA.

The Blue and Green won all three dual meets by substantial margins. The Eagles overwhelmed Gardner-Webb, 216-131, overpowered host Georgia Southern, 254-99, and routed North Florida, 262-90. With the three wins over CCSA schools, FGCU completed their second consecutive undefeated CCSA season, finishing with a 6-0 record this year after recording a perfect 5-0 CCSA record last season.

The only CCSA dual meet that the Eagles have ever lost was also the closest result in school history: a 150.5-149.5 loss at Georgia Southern on January 19, 2008. In three years of competition, the Blue and Green are a remarkable 14-1 in conference meets.

The Eagles came into day two of the event holding comfortable leads against all three schools, but they didn’t let up at all. FGCU won five of the nine events on day two, giving the Blue and Green 10 wins in 19 total events.

Day two began with 3-meter diving, in which Karmin McNamara (Tampa, Fla.) placed second with a score of 224.65, followed by a third-place finish (216.10 points) for Gaby Shaw (Boynton Beach, Fla.).

The first swimming event of the day saw the Eagles “A” team finish third in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:49.05. FGCU’s “B” team took fifth place in 1:52.58.

Vicky Cadge (Long Melford, Suffolk, United Kingdom) picked up FGCU’s first victory of the day, winning the 400 IM by almost seven seconds (4:27.12). Leah Daniel (Winnipeg, Manitoba) touched in with a fourth-place time of 4:40.65.

Line Lauridsen (Esbjerg, Denmark) grabbed first place in the 50 free, finishing in 53.50. Kori Golden (Glen Burnie, Md.) took third with a time of 53.63.

The winning continued for the defending conference champions, as Viktoria Hyddmark touched in first in the 200 back (2:05.12), over four seconds quicker than the rest of the field. Brittany Monaghan (Parkland, Fla.) placed third with a 2:09.87.

In the 200 breast, Myriam Plante (Sainte-Foy, Quebec) finished second with a time of 2:24.03. Caitlin Pine (Chesapeake, Va.) touched in 2:26.83, good for fifth place.

Daniel got the Eagles back in the win column in the 500 free, finishing in 5:05.12. Taylor Cooke (Homosassa, Fla.) took fourth (5:09.75) followed by Margrete Ulvestad (Molde, Norway) in fifth (5:10.11).

The last individual event, the 100 fly, saw Danielle Butler (Orangeburg, N.Y.) finish third (58.89), just two-hundredths of a second ahead of Alessandra Cianci (Plantation, Fla.), who took fourth (58.91).

The Blue and Green ended the meet in fitting fashion, with the “A” team of Plante, Daniel, Kristen Potter (Rockledge, Fla.), and Cadge winning the 400 free relay in a time of 3:32.62. FGCU’s “B” team took fifth in the event.

The Eagles land back at home to wrap up the regular season with a dual meet against cross-state rival Florida International on Saturday, January 23. The meet is scheduled for an 11:00 a.m. start at the FGCU Aquatics Center. Prior to the meet, lone senior Margie Chamberlin will be honored, as it will be her final home meet as an Eagle. In addition, the 2009 CCSA Conference Championship banner will be unveiled on Saturday. Admission to the public is free.
