College of Charleston drops pair to South Carolina
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams (2-4, 1-0/4-7, 4-3) dropped a pair of hard fought contests to in-state rival South Carolina on Saturday, January 9 at the Stern Center in Charleston, S.C. The men’s team fell by a score of 131-89 while the women posted a 124-90 decision.
Sophomore Matthew Sherrier (Boulder, Colo.) led the men’s team with a pair of victories while freshman Grace Herlong (Charleston, S.C.) and sophomore Haley Horkey (Waldorf, Md.) each notched a pair of top finishes to lead the women.
Sherrier posted times of 52.79 and 1:54.44 to claim top honors in the 100- and 200-meter freestyle events for the men while sophomore Nicholas Puciaty (Woodstock, Ga.) and senior Josh McFadden (Malvern, Pa.) swept the 200-meter breaststroke with times of 2:49.53 and 2:50.31, respectively.
For the women, Herlong claimed a first-place finish in the 200-meter butterfly (2:25.34) and runner-up honors in the 200-meter individual medley (2:29.80) while Horkey notched top honors with a time of 28.43 in the 50-meter freestyle. Sophomore Caitlin Shepherd (Lawrenceville, Ga.) led three Cougars in a sweep of the 200-meter breaststroke (2:54.99) and was joined by senior Cassie Tubb (Swedesboro, N.J.) in second with a time of 2:55.97 and sophomore Kayln Cogswell (Lexington, S.C.) in third at 2:59.93.
Junior Sara Gardocki (Suffield, Conn.) and senior Laura Brichler (Cincinnati, Ohio) rounded out the top performances for the College of Charleston with a pair of second place finishes. Gardocki earned her runner-up finish in the 800-meter freestyle (9:34.86) while Brichler posted a time of 2:14.66 in the 200-meter freestyle.
The Cougars will be back in action on Saturday, January 16 when they travel to Atlanta, Ga. for a non-conference match with Emory University. Start time is slated for 11 a.m.
Bison Fall to UMBC, Drexel in Tri-Meet
BALTIMORE, MD. - Against two large, formidable opponents, Howard fought a tough battle against the Drexel Dragons and the host UMBC Retrievers on Saturday afternoon. The tri-meet saw the Bison women fall to the Retrievers 124-87 and the men being taken down, 108-79. Drexel proved triumphant, as well, defeating the Bison 113 - 66 and 119-65 for the women and the men, respectively.
The men were led by senior Brad Worrell, who placed seventh in both the 200 freestyle (1:52.85) and 100 freestyle (50.32).
Alyssa Rogers paced the Bison women, with a sixth place finishes in the 100 breaststroke in 1:12.06, and another sixth place mark in the 200 breaststroke with a 2:36.29.
Both Worrell and Rogers contributed to the team's lone two relays. The women commenced the meet with a seventh place 200 medley relay swim. Freshmen E'lan Brewer and Summer Davis teamed with senior Polo Edwards and Rogers for their 2:01.59. To conclude the meet, Worrell led-off the 200 freestyle relay, and with juniors Damjan Strbac and Justin Morrison along with freshman Darien Washington, pulled in an eighth place finish with a 1:37.51.
The Bison will next face George Washington University on Friday, January 22 and then ready themselves for Senior Day on Saturday, January 23.

College of Charleston swimming and diving defeats Florida A&M in pair of victories
Tallahassee, Fla. – The College of Charleston’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams (2-3, 1-0/4-6, 4-3) earned a pair of victories at Florida A&M in the first meet of 2010 on Thursday, January 7. The men’s team delivered a 103-30 victory over the Rattlers while the women posted an impressive 114-34 decision in their meet.
Sophomore Matthew Sherrier (Boulder, Colo.) and Dmitry Gorin led the way for the men’s team as each earned a pair of victories while Haley Horkey did the same to lead the women’s effort.
Sherrier notched times of 2:14.82 and 49.29 to claim top honors in the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard freestyle, respectively, while Gorin’s victories came in the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.12) and 500-yard freestyle (5:01.99). They were joined by Patrick Jones and Jeff Mangano who each recorded first place finishes with marks of 22.91 in the 50-yard freestyle and 59.77 in the 100-yard backstroke, respectively. Sophomore Andrew Gerland (Worcester, Pa.) rounded out the top performers for the men with top honors in the 100-yard butterfly (56.54) and a runner-up outing in the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.23).
On the women’s side, Horkey earned her two top finishes in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events with times of 25.57 and 56.27. She was joined by freshman Gracie Herlong (Charleston, S.C.), junior Sara Gardocki (Suffield, Conn.) and freshman Ali Leberfinger (Chatham, N.J.), each of whom recorded a first-place finish. Herlong took the honors in the 100-yard butterfly (1:04.30) while Gardocki’s time of 5:21.28 in the 500-yard freestyle earned her top honors. Leberfinger posted a time of 1:07.13 in the 100-yard backstroke for her victory.
April Coyne notched a first-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley (2:23.12) and earned a runner-up finish in the 100-yard butterfly (1:07.16) while Kayln Cogswell and sophomore Caitlin Shepherd each delivered second- place performances. Cogswell posted a time of 2:27.24 in the 200-yard freestyle and Shepherd a mark of 27.55 in the 50-yard freestyle.
Both College of Charleston programs will be back in action on Saturday, January 9 when they welcome in-state rival South Carolina to the Stern Center for a 2 p.m. meet.
