Eagles Finish Second at Miami Invite

OXFORD, Ohio – The FGCU swimming & diving team wrapped up the Miami Invitational with a strong final day, using a pair of A final wins to solidly claim a second place finish overall. The Eagles held off a field that featured schools from major Division I conferences (Illinois and Cincinnati) as well as some of the nation's top Division III schools (Emory and Denison).

FGCU came into the final day holding on to a slim seven-point lead over Emory, meaning that every swim was important. The Eagles started well, picking up fourth (1:45.26) and sixth (1:46.72) in the day’s opening event, the 200 medley relay.

In the first individual event, the 200 back, Viktoria Hyddmark (Lund, Sweden) grabbed third place (2:02.00) in the A final while Brittany Monaghan (Parkland, Fla.) took eighth (2:04.11). Myriam Plante (Sainte-Foy, Quebec) won the B final in a time of 2:04.19.

Leah Daniel (Winnipeg, Manitoba) picked up some major points for the Eagles in the 500 free, winning the A final in 4:55.65. Margrete Ulvestad (Molde, Norway) finished seventh in 5:04.71. Kristen Potter (Rockledge, Fla.) had a good swim in the B final, finishing second (5:04.66).

In the 200 fly, Margie Chamberlin (Land O’Lakes, Fla.) took first place in the B final (55.71) with Danielle Butler (Orangeburg, N.Y.) finishing seventh (57.76). Alessandra Cianci (Plantation, Fla.) placed third in the C final with a 58.13 swim.

FGCU had a strong showing in the 200 breast, qualifying four swimmers to the B final and one to the A final. Plante made the A final, finishing fifth (2:19.22). The B final saw Vicky Cadge (Long Melford, Suffolk, U.K.) take first (2:21.39), Dani Beabrun (Vieux Fort, St. Lucia) finish second (2:23.29), Regina Rodriguez (Mexico City, Mexico) place fourth (2:23.99), and Caitlin Pine (Chesapeake, Va.) grab fifth (2:24.76). Catrina Silveira (Doral, Fla.) also won the C final in a time of 2:25.21.

Plante and Cadge dominated the 200 IM, finishing one-two in the A final, with Plante winning by almost four seconds in 2:02.84. Cadge’s time of 2:06.23 was still over a full second quicker than the rest of the field. Daniel took second in the B final (2:08.21), followed closely by Ulvestad in third (2:08.50) and Monaghan in fifth (2:09.35).

In the day’s only diving event, 1-meter diving, Karmin McNamara (Tampa, Fla.) finish seventh, accumulating a score of 258.25.

The final event of the competition, the 400 free relay, saw FGCU place sixth (3:30.05) and ninth (3:31.27), securing a second-place finish for the Eagles.

FGCU finished second of the eight schools participating, scoring a total of 1438 points in the meet. Miami University, the host school, who competed with 13 more swimmers and four more divers than the Eagles, won the event with 2321 points. Emory University, who came in trailing FGCU by just seven points, finished a distant third with 1355 points. Oakland (1008 points) and Illinois (1004) rounded out the top five, followed by Denison (919), Cincinnati (735), and Wright State (608). The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (213) and Tsinghua University (72) only took part in a handful of events, and are therefore not included in the final official standings.

The Eagles will have a little over a month to rest and prepare for their next meet, which takes place January 12th. FGCU will host Radford in a dual meet that afternoon. The meet is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. at the FGCU Aquatics Center.

Swimming & Diving Completes SCAD Invite

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida swimming and diving team had one final warm up before the second half of the season as it participated in the Savannah College of Art and Design Invitational on Dec. 3-5, at the Chatham County Aquatic Center in Savannah, Ga. Despite not taking its full compliment of swimmers, UNF still finished the meet in fifth place.

The meet consisted of 36 events total (18 for men; 18 for women), however, because of exam schedules and projects, North Florida only had swimmers compete in 14 events.

“The meet was during the weekend before finals, and at the end of a week when our kids had projects and tests,” head coach Beth Harrell remarked. “It is a busy time, so we did not take a full squad. We felt we needed to do something before the semester ended. We are now going to get back to training to get ready for UNC Wilmington in January.”

For the Ospreys, the meet was highlighted by junior Lyn Ann Nelson breaking the school record in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:25.00. Her time was good enough for first place. Nelson’s time bested Heather Rasor (2001-05), who set the record in 2005 with a time of 17:31.69. Nelson swam the mile one time last season, finishing second behind Rasor in UNF’s career top 10 with a time of 17:38.23.

In addition, Nelson also competed in the 100 free, 200 free, 500 free, 50 free, as well as the 200 medley relay, 400 medley relay, 200 free relay and 400 free relay. She claimed first place finishes in the 200 free (1:54.69), 500 free (5:05.90) and 100 free (53.77), setting meet records in each of the events

Senior Emily Shaw also competed in the 200 free. She posted a time of 2:00.23 in the finals of the event. Shaw joined sophomore Amanda Anderson in the top 10 of the 100 backstroke. Anderson (1:01.05) finished sixth with Shaw (1:02.89) taking seventh. Anderson picked up a sixth place finish in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:31.79.

Junior Taylor Crosby placed third in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:12.33. Freshman Caylin Drews (2:19.68) finished in the top 10 in the 200 IM with an eighth place finish, while freshman Margaret Hoynes (2:19.27 B-final) took 11th. Crosby posted a fifth place finish in the 100 breaststroke, as well, with a time of 1:10.60. Sophomore Amanda Singleton (1:12.78) took 15th in the 100 breaststroke.

The Ospreys had four swimmers compete in the 200 backstroke. In the 200 back, Shaw (2:13.69) led all UNF swimmers with a fifth place finish. Freshman Kelsey Bobzien (2:14.85) also finished in the top 10 in the event with an eighth place finish. Sophomore Gala Poon (2:16.68) and Hoynes (2:18.97) finished 11th and 14th, respectively.

In addition to Nelson, Bobzien and Shaw both competed in the 100 free. Nelson claimed the event with Bobzien (57.08) and Shaw (55.72 B-final) taking eighth and 14th, respectively.

UNF also compete in four relays with three top five finishes.

North Florida will spend time training for the second half of the season. The next meet for the Ospreys is slated for Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010, as UNF welcomes UNC-Wilmington to the UNF Aquatic Center for a meet scheduled for 11 a.m.

By comparison, Miami finished second and sixth, earning 112 points for the RedHawks in the event, compared to 80 for FGCU. Margrete Ulvestad (Molde, Norway) also picked up a second-place finish in the B final of the 200 free in a time of 1:53.16.

In the first diving event of the meet, the 3-meter competition, Karmin McNamara (Tampa, Fla.) took home a sixth-place finish with a total score of 260.35.

The final event was the 400 medley relay, where the Eagles swam better than in the day’s first relay. FGCU’s A team took fifth and the B team placed seventh, but Miami’s A team won the event, capping off the night in fitting fashion for the RedHawks.
