North Florida Wins Double-Dual Meet

DAYTONA, Fla. – The University of North Florida swimming and diving team picked up a pair of dual meet victories on Saturday afternoon as the Ospreys defeated Florida Atlantic and meet host Daytona State College. UNF downed Daytona State College 210-75, while picking up a 170-128 victory over FAU.

The victory over the Owls was the first in program history.

“I think that the team accepted the challenge to go out and compete against a great team in Florida Atlantic and were able to come away with a win,” said head coach Beth Harrell. “The front parts of our races aren’t as fast as we would like them to be but we are very strong in the middle and at the end. We will spend the next couple of weeks putting the proper people in place to prepare for the conference meet.”

The Ospreys recorded seven first place finishes on the day. Junior Lyn Ann Nelson won the 1,000-yard freestyle and the 500 free, while sophomore Amanda Anderson claimed first place in the 100 backstroke and the 200 backstroke. Junior Patricia Lanoue won the 200 butterfly. True freshman Julia Moomaw won the 3-meter diving event, while the relay team of freshman Kelsey Bobzien, junior Megan Boudreau, senior Emily Shaw and Nelson took first in the 400 freestyle relay.

UNF began the day with a second place finish in the 400 medley relay. The team of Anderson, Taylor Crosby, Lanoue and Nelson finished seven tenths of a second back of first place with a time of 4:00.28.

The second race of the day saw Nelson take first place with junior Caroline Larsson and Boudreau finishing second and fourth, respectively. Boudreau then finished third in the 200 free with freshman Kirsten Orndorff taking fourth and Kimberly Kuehl claiming fifth.

The Ospreys claimed the top four spots in the 100 backstroke. Anderson finished first, followed by Bobzien, Shaw and sophomore Gala Poon. In the 100 breaststroke, freshman Sara Evans finished in second place while fellow freshman Katie England took third.

North Florida picked up a first and second place finish in the 200 butterfly by Lanoue and Krisa Teresak, in that order. Shaw and Bobzien took second and third in the 50 freestyle in the final swimming event before the 1-meter diving event.

Moomaw placed second in the 1-meter springboard competition, helping UNF to a lead over both Florida Atlantic and Daytona State College at the first intermission of the afternoon.

When swimming resumed, Enland and Kuehl took second and third in the 100 free, followed by a first and second place finish by Anderson and Bobzien in the 200 backstroke and a third place finish by Evans in the 200 breaststroke.

The Ospreys finished one, two and three in the 500 free with Nelson, Larsson and Boudreau.

Teresak claimed third in the 100 butterfly, helping secure the victory over Daytona State College and putting the Ospreys just nine points away from the necessary points for a victory over FAU.

Moomaw earned nine points for her first place victory in the 3-meter diving competition.

In the final two races of the day, Evans and Anderson finished second and third, respectively, in the 200 individual medley and the Ospreys took first and third in the 400 freestyle relay.

North Florida returns to action on Friday, Feb. 5, as the Ospreys close out the regular season with a meet at UNF Arena. The meet is slated for 11 a.m.

Rogers Sparkles for Bison Against Hoyas

WASHINGTON, D.C. - In the team's final tune-up before their most significant meet of the season, the Howard Bison women's and men's swimming and diving teams braved the snow and hills of Northwest DC to face the Georgetown Hoyas on Saturday afternoon.  The Bison continue to make their way towards season-best swims, but the Hoyas proved too much for Howard to handle.  Georgetown took care of both meets by winning the women's contest 106-81 and the men's 110-101.

"Since October, we have met every challenge head-on with great intensity and purpose," said head coach Matt Salerno.  "We could not be more pleased with the progress each individual is making as we head to our Conference Championship."

Senior Alyssa Rogers was the star of the afternoon for the Lady Bison.  Rogers breaststroke times continue to shrink with every meet.  Her first victory on the afternoon was in the 100 breaststroke, going toe-to-toe with the Hoyas' Kathryn Berg.  Rogers was too much, though, out-touching Berg for first place honors with a time of 1:10.25.  Later in the contest, Rogers gained momentum as her 200 breaststroke progressed.  Her final time of 2:34.84 was a season-best and accounted for Howard's two individual victories on the snowy afternoon.

Freshmen Chelsea Andrews narrowly missed securing the team other first place finish.  Her time in the 100 freestyle of 53.93 was only 0.10 seconds away from the Hoyas' Lindsay Vickory, but was still good enough for second place.  Andrews also earned third place finishes in the 100 back (1:03.59) and the 100 fly (1:00.98.)  Her classmate Summer Davis finished third for the Bison in the 400 IM while senior captain Polo Edwards tallied a third place mark in the 500 freestyle.

On the men's side, freshman Zadok Isaacs fought valiantly for his two second place finishes.  His first was an exciting 200 backstroke race that saw him reach for a time of 2:03.47.  His second was a well-executed 400 IM that saw the native of Trinidad and Tobago finish in a time of 4:26.93.

Senior James Washington scored the only other second place finish for the Bison with his season-best time in the 500 freestyle.  Fellow senior Brad Worrell notched the Bison's only third place finish with a solid swim in the 100 freestyle.

"The team is taking advantage of every opportunity that they have to race against some great competition," said Salerno.  "Even though we fell short on the scoreboard, this is a great way for us to conclude our regular season schedule.  We continue to improve and keep our competitive drive, and that will pay dividends as we move forward."

The Bison will travel to Knoxville, Tennessee for the 2010 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Championship on February 18-20.
