Campbell Finishes Second At The Highlander Invitational

 

RADFORD, Va. - Campbell's swimming team (9-11) were able to finish in second in the Highlander Invitational with 732 total points on Saturday, Nov. 21 at the Dedmond Center in Radford, Va.

 

Freshman Emma Eisler continued her strong weekend and won the 200-breast with a time of 2:22.61.

 

Fellow freshman Magda Kedracka won the 200-butterfly in a school-record time of 2:11.54. The time broke the school record she set in the event earlier this season.

 

Senior Jackie Kenline continued her standout performances with a season-best 53.33 in the 100-free in finishing second.

Junior Kelly Mullican was also able to grab a top-three performance and finished third in the 200-back (23.60). The time was a season-best for Mullican.

 

The 400 free relay team of junior Ashlyn Stumpf, senior Kara Gerdeman, freshman Kaitlyn Tunstall and Kenline finished second in their event (3:39.02).

 

Campbell's swim team will now take a break from the pool for the holidays and final exams. CU will next compete on Jan. 22 at home against North Carolina A&T at 4 p.m.

Strong Performances by Turner, Miller and Friend Conclude Highlander Invitational

 

RADFORD, Va. – With several top-10 finishes on the final day of competition, the Radford swimming and diving team placed fifth at the Highlander Invitational Saturday afternoon at the Dedmon Center Natatorium. 

The Highlanders tallied 316 points to finish day three in fifth place. 

Freshman
Emily Turner (Baltimore, Md. /Eastern Technical) reached the finals in two events. Turner placed fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:32.16. She also placed ninth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.89, which places her fifth on the all-time top 10 performers list in the 100 freestyle. 

Also finishing in the top-10 was freshmen
Colleen Miller (Kent Island, Md. /Archbishop Spalding) and sophomore Whitney Friend (Charlottesville, Va. /Albemarle). Friend placed 10th in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 19:06.78 while Miller finished 10th in the 200-yard backstroke as well. 

The Highlanders will be back on January 8, when they travel to Greensboro, N.C. to face North Carolina A&T.

 

Swimming and Diving Completes Gamecock Invitational

 

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Georgia Southern swimming & diving team completed the Gamecock Invitational Saturday night. The Eagles finished seventh amongst a strong field of talented teams.

Georgia Southern picked up their first two finalist of the day in the 200 Breast. Ashley White (Charlotte, N.C.) finished 19th with a time of 2:27.69. Kristen Haudenschild (Woodbridge, Va.) placed 22nd with a new season-high time of 2:28.62.

Lauren Parr (Canton, Ohio) gave the Eagles their highest finish of the day in the 200 Fly. Parr finished 14th with a time of 2:06.88.

 

Lindsay Goodman (Knoxville, Tenn.) led the Eagles in the 200 Back. Goodman finished 26th with a time of 2:10.91. Lindsay Mullican (Lancaster, Pa.) placed 29th with a time of 2:11.96. Holly Hirsch (Fort Mill, S.C.) and Alex Mitchell (Maitland, Fla.) finished back-to-back and both improved on their previous season-best times. Hirsch placed 34th with a time o f 2:15.34, and Mitchell came in 35th place (2:15.69).

 

Courtney Martz (Woodbine, Ga.) led the way in the 100 Free, finishing 25th with a time of 53.09. Ali Campbell (Alberta, Canada) and Caroline Bevillard (Bishop, Ga.) finished back-to-back in 31st and 32nd place. Both improved on their previous season-high times. Campbell finished 31st with a time of 53.83, and Bevillard came in 32nd with a mark of 53.84.

 

Campbell opened the finals with a 10th place finish in the 1650 Free. Mullican placed 22nd with a time of 17:55.82.

 

White and Haudenschild finished back-to-back in 22nd and 23rd place in the 200 Breast. White finished with a time of 2:28.48, and Haudenschild recorded a time of 2:28.69.

Parr picked up six points with a 11th place finish in the 200 Fly (2:05.69).

 

Georgia Southern's 400 Free Relay team finished 12th with a time of 3:34.07.

 

Orellana, Graham and Andrews Sparkle on Day Two of Patriot Invitational

 

FAIRFAX, VA. - The Howard Bison continued their momentous showing at the 2009 Patriot Invitational starting from the first races of the morning and rolling through the final relays at night.

 

The impressive showings were led for the men by senior captain Miguel Orellana and senior Jules Graham and for the women by freshman Chelsea Andrews. 

 

In the preliminary session, Orellana swam a season-best time of 1:44.05 to claim eighth place and a birth in the championship heat.  Orellana rewrote his season-best mark with a well-executed time of 1:43.23 and a fourth place mark for the competition, the best showing for the Bison thus far in the meet.

Graham turned in a sterling performance in his 100 butterfly in the morning with a season-best time of 52.50, which slotted him into 16th place and a shot at the consolation finals heat.  Graham looked terrific in his evening swim and his final 25 yard surge carried him a new season-best time of 51.50, good enough to earn him 10th place in a very tightly contested race.

 

The two seniors combined with fellow senior Brad Worrell and freshman Zadok Issacs to claim Howard's best showing in the relays in the final race of the day, the 800 freestyle relay.  The men's time of 7:15.17 was their best of the season and good enough for 12th place on the evening.

 

On the women's side, Andrews' magnificent efforts were rewarded with return swims in the evening.  In the preliminary session, the freshman went a new career-best time of 1:00.11 which got her 24th place after all morning swims were done.  At night, Andrews began her evening routine by moving up three spots into 21st with a time of 1:00.17.  Andrews immediately turned around, both in preliminaries and finals, to swim the 200 freestyle.  In the morning, the rookie again set a new personal-best time of 1:58.16 which put her in 23rd place.  In her fourth competition of the day, Andrews swam her finest race, going 1:57.30 which vaulted her into 19th.

 

For the relays, the women began the evening session with a 15th place finish in the 200 medley relay.  Freshmen Summer Davis, Cachanda Evans, E'lan Brewer teamed with senior Alyssa Rogers to swim a 1:57.35.  The Lady Bison closed the evening with Brewer and Rogers combining with senior Polo Edwards and Andrews in the 800 freestyle relay to, again, finish in 15th place with a time of 8:22.55.

 

Sunday will be the final day of competition at the Patriot Invitational.  Preliminaries will begin at 9AM and finals at 5PM.

 

Nov. 20

 

Georgia Southern Completes Day Two Finals of Gamecock Invitational

 

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Georgia Southern swimming and diving team picked up points in the 200 Medley Relay, 800 Free Relay and the 100 Breast.

 

The Eagles finished 11th in the 200 Medley Relay with a season-high time of 1:48.68. The B squad placed 20th with a time of 1:51.29.

 

The Eagles' 800 Free Relay team finished seventh with a time of 7:42.92.

 

Lauren Parr (Canton, Ohio) finished 17th in the 400 IM and improved on her prelim time. Parr finished with a mark of 4:29.12.

 

Ashley White (Charlotte, N.C.) got the Eagles five points with a 12th place finish in the 100 Breast. White finished with a time of 1:06.99.

 

Parr, Caitlin Martin (Lilburn, Ga.) and Courtney Martz (Woodbine, Ga.) all competed in the finals of the 100 Fly. Parr finished 17th with a time of 57.80. Martin and Martz finished back-to-back in 21st and 22nd places. Martin swam the event in a time of 58.51, and Martz finished in 58.57 seconds.

Martz also swam the 100 Back and finished with a time of 59.08.

 

Kenline Leads Charge For Campbell on Second Day of the Highlander Invitational

 

RADFORD, Va. - Senior Jackie Kenline continued her strong meet for Campbell (4-10) on the second day of the Highlander Invitational on Friday, Nov. 20 in Radford, Va. at the Dedmond Center. Campbell heads into the final day firmly planted in second place in the meet with 514 total points.

 

Kenline was able break her own school record in the 200-free with a time of 1:54.83 in the event on Friday evening. The time also won the event and moved her up from a third-place finish in the afternoon preliminaries.

 

Freshman Emma Eisler also had a strong day with a season-best victory in the 100-breast (1:07.34) and second place finish in the 400 IM (4:41.02). Eisler also teamed with junior Kelly Mullican, freshman Magda Kedracka and junior Ashlyn Stumpf to finish third in the 200 medley relay (1:51.99).

 

CU's 800 free relay team also were able to come up with a top-three performance and finished as the runner-up in their event (8:04.49). The team was composed of Kedracka, freshman Kaitlyn Tunstall, Mullican and Kenline.

 

Campbell's swim team concludes competition at in the Highlander Invitational on Saturday. The events on the slate for tomorrow are the 200 Back, 100 Free, 200 Breast 200 Fly, 1,650 Free and the 400 Free Relay.

Turner, Shaffer and Miller Pace Highlanders on Day Two of Highlander Invitational

 

RADFORD, Va. – Led by a top-10 finishes from Katie Shaffer (Virginia Beach, Va./Oceanside), Emily Turner (Baltimore, Md./Eastern Technical) and Colleen Miller (Kent Island, Md./Archbishop Spalding), the Radford swimming and diving team completed the second day of the Highlander Invitational Friday evening at the Dedmon Center Natatorium. 

The Highlanders tallied 229 points to finish day two in fifth place. 

Turner reached the finals in two events, the 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard breaststroke. Turner placed sixth in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.27 and placed seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:10.96. 

Shaffer placed second for the Highlanders, scoring 236.55 points in the three-meter diving event. This is Shaffer’s third time this season where she has eclipsed more than 235 points on the three-meter boards. 

Miller was the other Radford swimmer to place in the top-10 with a season’s best time of 1:02.65 in the 100-yard backstroke. 

The Highlanders will be back in action tomorrow morning for day three of the Highlander Invitational starting at 9:30 a.m.

 

Howard Competes at George Mason Invitational

 

FAIRFAX, VA. - In their biggest test of the fall semester, the Howard University swim team commenced completion of the George Mason Invitational against some the finest competition around the Atlantic. 

 

The men's and women's teams combined to swim 13 season best swims during the preliminary session of the meet that including the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley and the 50 freestyle. 

This surge was led by senior Miguel Orellana and freshman Chelsea Andrews.  Orellana qualified for the bonus consolation heat in his 200 IM with a time of 1:59.39.  Swimming in the evening, the senior captain swam an excellent final 100 to better his time at 1:59.37, good for 24th place. 

 

Andrews represented the women in the evening with a well-executed 50 freestyle time of 24.65, putting her in a tie for 18th place going into the evening's session.  The rookie came back strong at night with a finals time of 24.60, good for 19th place.

The Howard relays earned their points with great swims in the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 medley relay.  For the women, the team of Cachanda Evans, E'Lan Brewer, Summer Davis and Andrews swam a season best time of 1:42.13 in finishing in 13th.  The relay of Davis, Alyssa Rogers, Evans and Polo Edwards finished 14th in the final event of the evening with a time 4:20.23 in the 400 medley relay.

 

The men captured the highest point total of the evening in the 200 free relay.  The relay of Damjan Strbac, Jules Graham, Orellana and Brad Worrell fired a season-best mark of 1:28.10, good for tenth place with their teammates Omar McKenzie, Steven Lott, Darien Washington and Zadok Isaacs coming in 15th with a time of 1:34.76.  To close the evening, the men's 400 medley relay of Isaacs, Orellana, Graham and Worrell powered their way to 15th place for a final time of 3:40.16, another season best.

 

The Bison will continue with Day Two of the George Mason Invitational on Saturday morning beginning at 10AM with finals starting at 6PM.

Kenline and Eisler Lead A Strong First Day Showing For Campbell At Highlander Invitational

 

RADFORD, Va. - Campbell's swim team (4-10) had a strong first day of competition at the Highlander Invitational on Thursday, Nov. 19 in Radford, Va. at the Demond Center. The Camels are currently ranked second of seven team after the first day with 329 points.

 

Freshman Emma Eisler, after placing third in the preliminaries of the 200-IM, upped her placing and time and won the event in the finals with her season-best time of 2:10.92. Senior Kara Gerdeman was also able to make the finals and finished sixth with a time of 2:16.66.

 

Senior Jackie Kenline had a strong opening day and also showed a huge improvement from the preliminaries to the finals in her events. Kenline was ranked sixth in the 500-free heading to the finals but swam a 5:13.25 to finish as the runner-up. Freshman Kaitlyn Tunstall was able to make the finals in the 500-free and finished sixth (5:20.14).

 

Kenline moved all the way up from eighth to second in the 50-free in a season-best time of 24.73. Junior Ashlyn Stumpf also competed in the finals of the 50 and finished fifth (24.91).

 

Kenline, Stumpf, Eisler and Gerdeman also teamed up to place second in the 200-free relay (1:39.48). The time was just under a second from breaking the school record in the event.

 

Kenline continued to swim well and teamed up with Gerdeman, freshman Magda Kedracka and sophomore Emily Michael to place second in the 400-medley relay (4:04.85).

 

Campbell's swim team continues competing in the Highlander Invitational on both Friday and Saturday. The events on the slate for tomorrow are the 400 IM, 100 Butterfly, 200 Free, 100 Breast, 100 Back, 200 Medley Relay and the 800 Free Relay. The events on tap for Saturday are the 200 Back, 100 Free, 200 Breast 200 Fly, 1,650 Free and the 400 Free Relay.

Highlanders End Day One of Invitational in Fourth Place

 

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford University swimming and diving team placed three competitors in the top-10 in four events at the Highlander Invitational Thursday night at the Dedmon Center Natatorium. 

The Highlanders scored 118 points to finish day one in fourth place. 

The Highlanders were led by freshman
Emily Turner (Baltimore, Md./Eastern Technical), who placed fourth in the 200-yard individual medley with a personal best time of 2:11.67. Turner’s time places her in the top three all-time performers in the 200-yard individual medley at Radford. She also placed eighth in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.33. 

Katie Shaffer (Virginia Beach, Va./Oceanside) placed third for the Highlanders, scoring 231.60 points in the one-meter diving event. 

Sophomore
Whitney Friend (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) was the other Highlander to place in the top-10, as she recorded a 10th place finish in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:26.06. 

Radford will back in action tomorrow morning for day two of the Highlander Invitational starting at 9:30 a.m.

 

Martz Finished 5th in the 50 Free at the Gamecock Invitational

 

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Courtney Martz (Woodbine, Ga.) highlighted Georgia Southern's first day of action at the Gamecock Invitational Thursday, advancing to the finals of the 50 Free. Martz finished sixth in the event with a season-high time (24.02). The top-24 finishers in each event advance to the finals at 6 p.m. each day.

 

Martz returned in the night cap and improved on her earlier preformance. She finished fifth and bested her earlier time, finishing with a mark of 24.00.

 

The Eagles also got a fifth place finish in the 200 Free Relay finals. Martz, Caroline Bevillard (Bishop, Ga.), Emily Fell (Brunswick, Ga.) and Ali Campbell (Alberta, Canada) combined for a time of 1:35.15.

 

Campbell just missed giving the Eagles a second representative in the finals, placing 25th in the 500 Free. Campbell set a new season-best time of 5:09.58 in the event. Lindsay Mullican (Lancaster, Pa.) placed 32nd with another solid performance. The freshman recorded a time of 5:13.25. Fellow freshman Fell was the next Eagle to finish, completing the 500 Free with a time of 5:15.00. Lindsay Goodman (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Jordyn Pasley (Knoxville, Tenn.) finished back-to-back in 39th and 40th places. Goodman set a new season-best time of 5:15.46, and Pasley finished with a time of 5:16.78.

 

Freshman Caitlin Martin (Lilburn, Ga.) led Georgia Southern in the 200 IM with a 46th place finish. Martin improved on her season-best time and finished with a mark of 2:13.61. Ashley White (Charlotte, N.C.) and Bevillard finished back-to-back in 48th and 49th places. White recorded a time of 2:14.73, and Bevillard finished with a time of 2:14.76. Katie Crider (Bloomington, Ind.), Rachael Stockwell (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Kristin Celii (Cary, N.C.) finished together in 58th, 59th and 60th place respectively. Crider finished 58th with a time of 2:18.78. Stockwell improved on her season-best time from the Campbell meet (Nov 6). Celii finished 60th with a mark of 2:19.43.

 

Laurie Stephens (Atlanta, Ga.) was the next Eagle to finish after Martz placed sixth in the 50 Free. Stephens came in 41st with a time of 25.42. Jordyn Pasley (Knoxville, Tenn.) finished 51st with a time of 25.75. Katie Crider (Bloomington, Ind.) was the fourth Eagle to finish in the 50 Free. She came in with a time of 25.82. Celii and Anna Pudik (Chapel Hill, N.C.) finished back-to-back in 68th and 69th places. Celii came in with a time of 26.80, and Pudik finished with a time of 27.11.

 

The Eagles' 400 Medley Relay team finished 16th in the finals with a time of 3:57.88.

 

Swimming & Diving continues the Gamecock Invitational tomorrow and will wrap it up Saturday.
