Campbell Splits Meet In Virginia; Defeats Radford and Falls To Marshall

 

RADFORD, Va - Campbell's swim team (4-10) split its meet in Radford, Va. on Saturday, Nov. 14. CU defeated Radford by a 139-91 score but fell to Marshall 127-109.

The Camels were able to secure 14 top-three finishes and won five events on the afternoon.

Senior Jackie Kenline had a strong meet with an individual victory in the 100-free (54.27), a team win in the 400-free relay (3:43.02) and a second place ranking in the 200-free (1:56.25). Other members of the 400-free relay team include junior Ashlyn Stumpf, senior Mary Beth Dellinger and freshman Kaitlyn Tunstall.

Stumpf also won the 50-free (25.38) and place second in the 100-free (55.40) for CU.

The 400 medley relay team of senior Kara Gerdeman, sophomore Emily Michael, senior Casey Umberger and Dellinger placed second in their event (4:12.02).

Umberger also placed third in the 200 IM in a season best time of 2:16.62) and third in the 100-breast (1:11.70).

Junior Kelly Mullican finished third in both the 1000-free (11:12.19) and the 100-back (1:03.28).

Freshman Magda Kedracka won the 500-free (5:33.82) and finished fourth in the 400-butterfly (1:01.27).

Michael won the 100-breast (1:09.04) and finished fourth in the 200-IM (2:18.09) 

Next, Campbell's swimming program heads back to Radford from Nov. 19-21 to participate in the Highlander Invitational.

 

College of Charleston swimming and diving drops decisions at UNC Wilmington

 

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The College of Charleston’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams (1-3, 1-0/3-5, 3-3) dropped a pair of decisions to strong UNC Wilmington teams in a non-conference meet on Saturday, November 14, 2009. The men’s team dropped a 157-125 decision to UNCW (10-1) while the women fell 156-124 to the Seahawks (10-2).

Senior
Randy Buchanan (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) and sophomore Matthew Sherrier (Boulder, Colo.) each earned a pair of victories to lead the way for the College of Charleston men’s team while freshman Gracie Herlong (Charleston, S.C.) notched three first place finishes to pace the women.

Freshman
Gracie Herlong (Charleston, S.C.) was the top performer for the women as she won the 100- and 200-yard butterfly events with times of 59.97 and 2:08.52, respectively, and claimed top honors in the 400-yard individual medley with a mark of 4:39.37. Junior Sara Gardocki (Suffield, Conn.) dominated the freestyle events, winning the 500-yard event at 5:23.26 and 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:37.63.

Sophomore
Caitlin Shepherd notched a pair of runner-up finishes in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.21) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:30.43) while senior Laura Brichler (Cincinnati, Ohio) did the same in the 500-yard freestyle (5:25.21). She also joined with Gardocki and freshman Ali Leberfinger (Chatham, N.J.) and senior Bailey Clark (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) in leading the Cougars to a first place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:46.97).

Senior
Susan MacGillivray (Westwood, Ma.) took top honors in the diving portion of the meet as she totaled 200.83 points in the three-meter dive. Senior Katie Peck (Fairfield, Conn.) finished with 166.35 points in that event for a runner-up finish.

Both College of Charleston programs will be back in action from November 20-22 when they travel to the prestigious South Carolina Gamecock Invitational. That meet traditionally features over 20 programs, most of which are among the top performers in the region.

 

Highlanders Fall to Marshall and Campbell in Double Dual Meet

 

RADFORD, Va. – Freshman Emily Turner (Baltimore, Md./Eastern Technical) earned a victory in the 200-yard individual medley, but it wasn’t enough as the Radford women’s swimming and diving team fell to Marshall and Campbell in a double dual meet on Saturday at the Dedmon Center Natatorium. 

The Highlanders dropped a 146-88 decision against the Thundering Herd, while suffering a 139-91 setback against the Fighting Camels. 

Turner finished first with a time of 2:14.05 in the 200-yard individual medley and also placed third in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.16. 

Katie Shaffer (Virginia Beach, Va./Oceanside) finished third in both diving events for the Highlanders, scoring 233.32 points in the one-meter event and 246.07 in the three-meter event. 

The Highlanders will back in action as they host the Highlander Invitational starting Thursday morning.

 

Catholic University of America 125, Howard 70

 

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Howard University swimmers made the quick trip past the McMillan Reservoir to renew their rivalry with the Catholic University of America Cardinals.  Behind many focused and hard-fought swims from across the entire roster, the Howard women, who took six of 11 events, fell short to Catholic by a score of 125-70.

 

“It was a terrific day for the program,” said head coach Matt Salerno.  “Everyone on the roster continues to work hard in putting themselves and their teammates in the best position to succeed.  We looked very focused today and the results showed.”

 

The Bison women may not have won the overall contest, but their advantage in victories showcased a great amount of talent.  Four different Bison ladies took charge of their events, led by freshman Chelsea Andrews.  The rookie’s 200 freestyle victory time of 2:00.11 was earn best mark of the season, winning by more than eight seconds.  Andrews’ smooth swim in the 500 freestyle carried her to victory with a time of 5:36.23.  Andrews' led the charge, too, in the Lady Bison winning 400 freestyle relay with a split of 54.14.  Fellow freshmen Cachanda Evans, E’lan Brewer and senior Polo Edwards completed the relay with a winning time of 3:49.71.

 

Each of the members of the winning relay also took charge of their own individual races.  Edwards cruised to victory in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 11:36.52.  Evans’ first collegiate victory saw her split a 26.73 and Brewer’s finest meet of the season was highlighted by a 100 freestyle victory time of 56.88.

 

“Everyone played a role in this very spirited and successful afternoon,” said Salerno.  “We are gelling at a great time of the season; the energy and enthusiasm are contagious and it's enjoyable to see the swimmers continue to improve week in and week out.”

 

Next weekend, the Bison will travel to Fairfax, Virginia to take part in the Patriot Invitational.  The meet will begin on Friday at 10:00 am and run through Sunday, November 22nd with preliminary and finals swims being run all three days.
