Buchanan and Herlong's three first place finishes pace CofC swimming and diving in losses to East Carolina

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Senior Randy Buchanan (Mt. Pleasant, S.C) and freshman Gracie Herlong (Charleston, S.C.) paced the College of Charleston swimming and diving teams with three first place finishes a piece as the men's team (1-2, 1-0) dropped a 178-120 decision to East Carolina (2-1) while the women's team (3-4, 3-3) fell 195-99 to the Pirates (2-1) Saturday, November 7 at the Stern Center.

Buchanan led the men's effort with top honors in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:04.81), 200-meter breaststroke (2:26.01) and 200-meter individual medley (2:10.17) while sophomore Matthew Sherrier (Boulder, Colo.) earned a pair of first place finishes in the 100- and 200-meter freestyle events with times of 53.65 and 1:54.90. He also took second in the 400-meter freestyle with  mark of 4:07.64.

Senior Chris Rogers (Aiken, S.C.) added two top honors in the 100-meter backstroke (59.29) and 200-meter backstroke (2:12.17) and senior Greg Greer (Clemmons, N.C.) finished second in the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 59.22. Reigning Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Diver of the Week Peter Gibbons (Faifax, Va.) earned two second place finishes in the one-meter dive (235.20) and the three-meter dive (211.65) to round out the top finishers for the men.

On the women's side, Herlong set the pace with first place performances in the 100- and 200-meter butterfly events with times of 1:06.11 and 2:23.50, respectively, and also took top honors in the 200-yard individual medley with a mark of 2:28.84. In that same event, freshmen Casey Sweeney (2:31.58) and Jordan Fogarty (2:45.47) helped the Cougars secure a sweep with second and third place finishes.

A pair of second place finishers in wrapped up the top performers for the College of Charleston as junior Sara Gardocki (Suffield, Conn.) earned a runner-up finish in the 800-meter freestyle event (9:18.64) and sophomore Caitlin Shepherd (Lawrenceville, Ga.) took second in the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:17.30).

Both teams will be back in action when they travel to UNC Wilmington on Saturday, November 14 for a 2 p.m. meet. 

 

NC State 167, Davidson 100

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Leading the Davidson Wildcat swimming and diving team, Lindsey Martin continued her winning ways with a pair of individual titles, but the NC State Wolfpack was victorious on both sides of a dual meet Saturday afternoon at Cannon Natatorium.

The Wolfpack men (3-0) downed Davidson (0-6), 167-100, while the Wildcat women (1-5) dropped a 157-129 decision to NC State (4-1).

Martin swept the freestyle sprints, winning the 50 free with a time of 23.79 and the 100 free in 51.94.

For the Wildcat men, sophomore
Geoffrey Peitz won the 100 back with a time of 53.31, and freshman Drew Onken continued winning, by taking the title in the 400 IM with a time of 4:06.42. Peitz also finished second in the 200 back with a time of 1:55.33, while Onken was the runner-up in the 100 breast with a time of 1:00.41. Sophomore Curtis Chaney also turned in a second-place finish in the 200 free with a time of 1:44.40.

Both Wildcat men relays finished in the second spot as well, with the 200 medley team of Peitz, Onken, senior
Miller Williams and junior Bryan Droll doing so in 1:36.21, and the 200 free team of Peitz, freshman Wills Cooper, junior Tennant Brastow and Droll in 1:26.71.

The Wildcats will now take three weekends off to prepare for the Nike Invitational at Kenyon College Dec. 3, the finale of the first half of the season.

Gardner-Webb Men’s Swimming Defeats Limestone Friday Evening

 

GAFFNEY, SC- The Gardner-Webb men's swim team traveled down to Limestone College Friday evening, and left Gaffney, S.C. with a 163-99 victory.

 

Eight different Bulldog swimmers earned victories on the evening, with freshman DJ Hughes leading the way with three victories.  His time of 54.53 in the 100 yard butterfly was fastest, as well as his team's time of 3:33.14 in the 400 yard medley relay with teammates sophomore Samuel Woods, junior Casey Brutus, and junior Stephen Caudill.  Hughes' team in the 800 yard freestyle was also fastest at 7:15.96, with teammates freshman Tyler Nuss, freshman Mitchell Turner, and junior George Partin.

 

Nuss was also victorious in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 10:00.96.  Woods was also quickest in the 100 yard backstroke at 54.52.  Brutus won the 100 yard breaststroke as well with a time of 1:01.44.  Caudill was also quickest in he 200 yard butterfly with a time of 1:56.33.  Sophomore Colline Burchins was victorious in one event, the 200 yard breaststroke, with a time of 2:15.13

 

The Bulldogs will return to the pool on November 20th-22nd as they travel to Atlanta, Ga., to take on Georgia Tech.
