Women’s Weekend Recap - Oct. 16/17
Saturday, Oct. 17 Florida Gulf Coast 195, Miami 99 and Florida State 187, Florida Gulf Coast 113 FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU swimming & diving team hosted their first home meet of the 2009-10 season Saturday, defeating Miami 195-99 and falling to Florida State 187-113. This marks the first-ever win for the FGCU swimming & diving program over the University of Miami. With the split, the Eagles record now stands at 3-3 on the season. The Eagles got off to a great start, winning the opening event, the 200-yard medley relay in a pool-record time of 1:46.35. In event two, the 1000-yard freestyle, FGCU picked up another victory thanks to Leah Daniel (Winnipeg, Manitoba) swimming a 10:12.89, winning the event by nearly five seconds. The Eagles’ Myriam Plante (Sainte-Foy, Quebec) posted a solid time of 59.03 in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing third behind two Seminoles, but beating Miami’s Hannah King by .05 seconds. FGCU picked up some major points in the 200-yard butterfly, with Margie Chamberlain (Land O’Lakes, Fla.) winning the event in 2:03.68, and Alessandra Cianca (Plantation, Fla.) placing third with a 2:07.93. In the seventh event, the 50-yard freestyle, FGCU’s Line Lauridsen (Esbjerg, Denmark) took second place with a time of 23.98, just .04 seconds behind Florida State’s Shanda Casella. In the event, all three Eagle swimmers placed ahead of the Hurricanes two swimmers. After seven events the Eagles held an 82-49 advantage over Miami, and trailed FSU 75-56. In event nine, the 100-yard freestyle, freshman Line Lauridsen had another good swim, finished third with a time of 53.03. The Eagles had a strong showing in the 200-yard backstroke, as all three Eagles finished ahead of Miami’s swimmers, extending FGCU’s lead over the Hurricanes. Leah Daniel won her second event of the day in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing in a time of 4:59.12, over four seconds ahead of the field. In the 13th event, the 100-yard butterfly, Margie Chamberlain grabbed second place with a time of 57.13, just behind Florida State’s C.J. Hendry. Event 15, the 400-yard individual medley, saw the Eagles place two swimmers in the top three, with Myriam Plante winning in 4:26.32 and Leah Daniel taking third in 4:30.32. In the day’s final event, the 200-yard freestyle relay, FGCU took second place behind FSU, but finishing just ahead of Miami. Head coach Neal Studd was pleased with his team’s performance, saying afterwards, “Today was really special for me and the team. It has been a great success to build a team from scratch and have success against such a big name like Miami. There were so many highlights to this meet; I am proud of every team member for their effort and attitude today. Even though Miami left their diving athletes at home, in head-to-head swimming competition, we still dominated the Hurricanes in the combined 14 swimming events.” The Eagles will be back in the water next Saturday, October 24, when they travel to Miami to take on Florida International in a dual meet. The meet is scheduled to begin at 11 AM. The next home meet for FGCU is Friday, October 30, when Florida Atlantic and the University of Tampa will visit Fort Myers. That meet is scheduled for 6 PM. Gardner-Webb 117– Campbell 87 and Gardner-Webb 165– Florida A&M 21 BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Both Gardner-Webb’s men’s and women’s swim teams faired well Saturday afternoon, as the women’s team defeated Campbell by a 117-87 score and Florida A&M 165-21, and the men’s team defeated Florida A&M by a 94-35 score.
For the women’s team, Bulldog swimmers won six of the eleven events. The team of juniors Sarah Steadman and Stepheni Stadnik, and sophomores Veronica Case and Hillary Leonard won the 400 yard medley relay with a time of 4:10.30. Junior Rachel Glenn was victorious in the 1000 yard freestyle, timing in at 11:16.97. Freshman Michelle Palacio won the 400 yard IM with a time of 4:43.36. Senior Corey Hughey wom the 200 yard backstroke, timing in at 2:09.68. Freshman Kathleen Wilkinson was victorious in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:23.78, and freshman Kim Zachensky won the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:21.78.
Members of the men’s swim team were the quickest to time in for each event the team competed in. Impressively, thirteen different members of the squad were victorious throughout the event. Leading the way for the Bulldogs was freshman Mitch Turner, who was quickest in three separate events. In the 50 yard freestyle, he timed in at 22.87, his time in the 500 yard freestyle was 4:57.70, and he was part of the team that won the 400 yard freestyle relay. Other members of the winning team were juniors Abram Miller, Travis Gibson, and Steven Caudill, who all timed in at 3:24.29.
The GWU swim teams will return to action on October 23rd as they travel to Wilmington, NC to face off against UNC-Wilmington.
East Carolina 183, Davidson 116
DAVIDSON, N.C. - Freshman Drew Onken won three individual titles and junior Lindsey Martin won a pair for the Davidson Wildcat swimming and diving teams, but the East Carolina Pirates prevailed in a dual meet Saturday afternoon at Cannon Natatorium.
The other individual winner for the Wildcat women, junior Emily Castle finished first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 57.25.
The Wildcats will return to action next weekend, traveling to Emory for a noon meet on Oct. 24.
Old Dominion 185, College of Charleston 106
NORFOLK, Va. – The College of Charleston men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams each suffered defeats to Old Dominion (1-0) as the men (0-1) fell 184-94 and the women (1-1) dropped a 185-106 decision Saturday afternoon in Norfolk, Va.
For the women, freshman Grace Herlong (Charleston, S.C.) earned three runner-up finishes with times of 59.81 in the 100-yard butterfly, 2:11.85 in the 200-yard butterfly and 10:43.17 in the 1,000-yard freestyle. She was joined by junior Sara Gardocki (Suffield, Conn.) who notched a first-place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:38.95) and two third-place performances in the 200-yard freestyle (2:01.40) and 500-yard freestyle (5:20.65).
VMI Falls to Georgetown and James Madison WASHINGTON, D.C. – In their first competition of the season, the VMI women’s swimming & diving team broke a pair of school records while competing against JMU and Georgetown at the Albert G. McCarthy, Jr. Swimming Pool on Saturday.
The Keydets started the day by setting a new 200 medley relay mark, as the team of junior Chelsea Nugent, freshman Kim Wheeler, junior Lizanne Carlos and sophomore Veronica Lentsch swam a 2:15.06 to best the old record by nearly two seconds. Junior Briana Allard later established a new record in the one-meter dive, notching a score of 145.05 to surpass her own mark by over seven points.
The team of Nugent, senior Ateala Tuff, Carlos and Lentsch later swam a 1:59.63 in the 200 freestyle in the team’s other relay event.
Individually, Nugent notched a pair of ninth-place finishes, coming in the 50 freestyle (27.34) and the 100 butterfly (1:07.17). Tuff did the same in the 200 (2:31.73) and 500 freestyle (7:04.06) events. Freshman Pin-Fen Chen touched the wall in 1:13.22 in the 100 backstroke, and 2:43.62 in the 200, while Wheeler’s 1:36.18 in the 100 breaststroke also placed her ninth.
The women’s swimming & diving team returns to action this Saturday, as Pfeiffer comes to the Clark King Hall Pool for a dual set to begin at 2 p.m.
Friday - Oct. 16 College of Charleston 138.50, Radford 91.50 RADFORD, Va. – A pair of first place finishes from junior Sara Gardocki and a strong overall performance helped lead the College of Charleston women’s swimming and diving program (1-0) to a season-opening 138.50 – 91.50 victory over Radford (0-1) on Friday, October 16 in Radford, Va.
East Carolina 117, Gardner-Webb 88 BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - This Friday afternoon, the Gardner-Webb men's and women's swim teams returned to the pool for the first home meet of the 2009-10 season against the East Carolina Pirates. In what was an exciting meet, the Pirates women were victorious by a score of 117-88, and the Pirate men were victorious by a 108-97 score. Leading the way for the GWU women's swim team were freshman Kim Zachensky and junior Rachel Warkentin, who each won two events. Both Zachensky and Warkentin were victorious in the 200 yard medley relay, along with junior Sarah Steadman and senior Corey Hughey with a time of 1:47. 47. Zachensky also was victorious in the 100 yard breastroke, timing in at 1:04.57, and Warkentin also won the 100 yard butterfly event, with a time of 58.04. The GWU men's swim team was lead by junior Steven Caudill, who was victorious in the 200 yard IM with a time of 1:59.53, and the 100 yard butterfly, timing in at 52.11. Both swim teams turn around quickly to face Florida A&M and Campbell Saturday afternoon at the Gardner-Webb Aquatics Center. The meet is scheduled to begin at 4:00 PM.
Howard Falls at Seton Hall SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Howard University Men's and Women's swim teams traveled to East Orange, New Jersey on Friday evening to face the Seton Hall Pirates. The Bison amassed a spirited effort against the host Pirates, but fell just short of team victory. The women were defeated by Seton Hall by a score of 158-83 and the men dropped their contest 148-115.
"This was a marvelous performance by our team," said head coach Matt Salerno. "Our enthusiasm and competitive fire were the strongest they've been all season. They way our team fought despite being broken down physically speaks volumes about the direction this team is pointing itself in."
The Lady Bison turned in their finest races of the season behind the speed of freshman Chelsea Madison. The rookie highlighted the evening's showdowns with a first place finish in the 100 freestyle. With tremendous closing speed, Andrews took charge of the race in the final few yards to win with a time of 54.04. Andrews nearly missed another first place finish in the 100 butterfly. Her 1:02.76 was just .03 seconds behind Natalie Toczlowski of Seton Hall for first place.
Seniors Alyssa Rogers had a terrific meet, as well. Rogers finished third in both the 100 and 200 breaststrokes with times of 1:11.25 and 2:36.74, respectively. Fellow senior and co-captain Polo Edwards finished fourth in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:37.30. The final race of the evening for the women was also their fastest. The 200 free relay saw the team's band of freshmen, E'lan Brewer, Cachanda Evans, Summer Davis and Andrews finish with a second place finish of 1:44.03, just .12 seconds from Seton Hall's winning relay.
On the men's slate, that same 200 freestyle relay provided fireworks to close the evening for the entire team. The Bison out-touched the Pirates with stellar performances by junior Jules Graham and Damjan Strbac and seniors Miguel Orellana and Brad Worrell. The team's 1:29.59 was the team's first relay victory of the young season and capped a fantastic night of racing.
Prior to the finale, the men turned-in some fantastic races. Orellana's great season continued with another victory in the 200 freestyle, finishing with a time of 1:47.36. Orellana also touched in second place in the 200 IM with a time of 2:02.95 and third in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:54.55. Graham had an outstanding meet, as well. The junior's first competition of the season saw him finish second in the 100 backstroke and the 100 butterfly with times of 55.33 and 54.50, respectively.
Other notable swims including Strbac's second place blitz in the 50 freestyle, finishing second with a 22.58. Sophomore Kelvin Goodman touched in the third with a 1:07.76 in his 100 breaststroke and Graham's fourth race of the evening saw him take third in the 100 free with a 48.78.
"There was a noticeable difference in our energy from last week," said Salerno. "This was a great night for our team and I know that we will take this momentum that we've created for ourselves and build on it for the months to come."
The Bison will be in action again on Friday, October 30th when the team travels across the District to face American University.
