FGCU Tops Florida Atlantic and Tampa

 

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU swimming and diving team swept Florida Atlantic and Tampa in a tri-meet Friday evening, picking up convincing victories over both schools. The Eagles defeated FAU 180-112 and knocked off Tampa 194-92.

The Blue and Green started strong, placing first and second in the first event, the 200 medley relay. Then, in the second women’s event, the 200 free, Eagle swimmers placed first, third, fourth, and fifth. This set the tone for the evening, as FGCU would dominate both the Owls and the Spartans throughout the meet.

Florida Atlantic’s Eszter Bucz was the only female swimmer not wearing an FGCU suit that won an event, until the Eagles chose to exhibition the last few events. Bucz won the 100 breast and the 1000 free, but the Eagles still performed well in both events, placing second, third, and fourth in both.

Four Eagles recorded multiple individual wins on the day. Myriam Plante (Sainte-Foy, Quebec) won the 100 back in 57.78 and the 200 breast in 2.22.07. Line Lauridsen (Esbjerg, Denmark) placed first in the 50 free in 23.63 and the 100 free in 52.25. Margie Chamberlin (Land O’Lakes, Fla.) won the 100 fly in 56.95 and the 200 fly in 2:04.05. Chamberlin and Lauridsen also took part in the Eagles first-place finish in 200 medley relay, swimming the third and fourth legs, respectively, for FGCU’s “A” team. Karmin McNamara (Tampa, Fla.) finished first in the 1-meter diving with a score of 243.52 and the 3-meter diving with a score of 260.17.

The Eagle swimmers will be back in the water on November 11, traveling to Jacksonville to battle CCSA and in-state rival North Florida in a dual meet. Start time is set for 2 p.m.

William & Mary Defeats Davidson

 

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Davidson Wildcats dropped a pair of dual meet decisions to the College of William & Mary Friday night at Cannon Natatorium.

The Tribe defeated the Wildcat men (0-4), 131-87 and the Wildcat women (0-4), 149-90.

Sophomore Geoffrey Peitz and freshman Drew Onken each won a pair of individual titles to highlight the Wildcat men's performance. Peitz won the 200 IM with a time of 1:58.45 and returned to win the 200 fly with a time of 1:57.62. Onken won the 200 back with a time of 1:54.87 and the 200 breast with a time of 2:08.07.

Junior Bryan Droll was also an individual event winner for the Wildcat men, finishing first in the 50 free with a time of 21.96 for his first dual meet victory.

For the Wildcat women, junior Emily Castle swam just seconds off the Davidson record with a first-place time of 2:08.13 in the 200 fly.

Kelsey Chisholm placed first on the 1-meter with a score of 227.25 and finished second to teammate Linnea Buttermore on the 3-meter with a score of 210.75. Buttermore won the event with a score of 212.63.

The Wildcats will return to action with a 2 p.m. dual meet at CCSA-foe College of Charleston.

 

Howard Battles, Falls to American

 

WASHINGTON, D.C. -  The Howard University women's and men's swimming team took on their cross-town foes from American University on Friday evening.  Behind several terrific races and the continued progression of the team's successes, the Bison battled the Eagles in every event.  American, however, proved to be the victor on both fronts as men's squad edged Howard, 107-86, while the women's team beat the Bison, 106-56.

 

The men turned in three convincing victories on the evening.  Senior co-captain Miguel Orellana wore out the Eagle oncomers in the 1000 freestyle.  Swimming the event for the first time this season, Orellana notched his third individual victory of the year with a time of 10:20.64.  Jules Graham looked outstanding winning the 200 IM.  Graham's race was very close heading into the final 50, but the senior flattened the Eagles with his freestyle leg and finished with a winning mark of 2:03.17.

 

The two seniors teamed on the triumphant 200 freestyle relay.  Combined with junior Damjan Strbac and senior Brad Worrell, the Bison won with a 1:28.64, more than five seconds ahead of American.

 

Orellana also put in a fine effort in the 200 backstroke with a second place time of 2:05.74.  Graham's 500 freestyle, which included a tremendous final 100, was clocked at 5:06.14, good for second place.  Worrell had a fine meet, as well.  His 100 free split of 49.33 was a season best by over one second notching him a second place finish.  Sophomore Kelvin Goodman was fantastic in his 200 breaststroke, finishing in second with a 2:21.73, a career best by over six seconds.

 

The women were equally impressive with their effort and determination.  Every member of the Lady Bison swam a season-best time in at least one event.  Chelsea Andrews notched the best finishes for the ladies.  The freshman shaved two seconds from her 200 IM time for a second place finish of 2:16.46.  Andrews' 100 freestyle swim of 54.17 saw her, again, finish second while fellow freshman E'lan Brewer garnered a season best split of 57.05.

 

Seniors Polo Edwards and Alyssa Rogers were outstanding on the evening.  Edwards 17 second drop in the 1000 freestyle set the tone for the rest of the meet, finishing in third place at 11:22.09.  Rogers continued her descent in the 200 breaststroke with a third place tally of 2:35.51.  Adding to the team's improved performance were freshmen Summer Davis and Cachanda Evans.  Davis' 500 freestyle was nine seconds faster from her previous race as she clocked a 5:51.87 and Evans' 50 free split was a new career best with a third place time of 26.36.

 

"It is very satisfying to see the team feed off each other's energy," said head coach Matt Salerno.  "The way we continue to fight through fatigue is something that each of the swimmers can be proud of and use for the future.  The Eagles are an excellent team and we were right with them in all of the races."

 

The Bison will be back in action on Saturday, November 14th when they travel down the road to Catholic University of America for the 1PM contest.
