MEN’S RECAP - Oct. 17
Gardner-Webb 94, Florida A&M 35 BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Both Gardner-Webb’s men’s and women’s swim teams faired well Saturday afternoon, as the women’s team defeated Campbell by a 117-87 score and Florida A&M 165-21, and the men’s team defeated Florida A&M by a 94-35 score.
For the women’s team, Bulldog swimmers won six of the eleven events. The team of juniors Sarah Steadman and Stepheni Stadnik, and sophomores Veronica Case and Hillary Leonard won the 400 yard medley relay with a time of 4:10.30. Junior Rachel Glenn was victorious in the 1000 yard freestyle, timing in at 11:16.97. Freshman Michelle Palacio won the 400 yard IM with a time of 4:43.36. Senior Corey Hughey wom the 200 yard backstroke, timing in at 2:09.68. Freshman Kathleen Wilkinson was victorious in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:23.78, and freshman Kim Zachensky won the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:21.78.
Members of the men’s swim team were the quickest to time in for each event the team competed in. Impressively, thirteen different members of the squad were victorious throughout the event. Leading the way for the Bulldogs was freshman Mitch Turner, who was quickest in three separate events. In the 50 yard freestyle, he timed in at 22.87, his time in the 500 yard freestyle was 4:57.70, and he was part of the team that won the 400 yard freestyle relay. Other members of the winning team were juniors Abram Miller, Travis Gibson, and Steven Caudill, who all timed in at 3:24.29.
The GWU swim teams will return to action on October 23rd as they travel to Wilmington, NC to face off against UNC-Wilmington.
Old Dominion 184, College of Charleston 94
NORFOLK, Va. – The College of Charleston men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams each suffered defeats to Old Dominion (1-0) as the men (0-1) fell 184-94 and the women (1-1) dropped a 185-106 decision Saturday afternoon in Norfolk, Va.
The Cougars are back in action Friday, October 23 when the women host North Carolina A&T and Campbell at the Stern Center in Charleston, S.C. Start time is slated for 2 p.m. for that meet while the men will next be in action on October 31 vs. Davidson at the Stern Center with a 2 p.m. start.
East Carolina 167, Davidson 120
DAVIDSON, N.C. - Freshman Drew Onken won three individual titles and junior Lindsey Martin won a pair for the Davidson Wildcat swimming and diving teams, but the East Carolina Pirates prevailed in a dual meet Saturday afternoon at Cannon Natatorium.
Onken led the Wildcat men with three individual titles. He finished first in the 100 breast with a time of 59.70, the 200 breast with a time of 2:08.42 and the 400 IM with a time of 4:04.13. East Carolina finished 167-120 to the Wildcat men.
On the men's side, sophomore Curtis Chaney and sophomore Geoffrey Peitz each won a pair of individual titles.
VMI Falls at Georgetown WASHINGTON, D.C. – The VMI men’s swimming & diving team dropped a 223-49 dual to Georgetown at the Albert G. McCarthy, Jr. Swimming Pool on Saturday.
The Keydets were led by senior Will Rowcliffe, who notched the team’s only win, swimming the 50 freestyle in 22.26 seconds. Rowcliffe also placed fourth in the 100 freestyle (49.94) and combined with sophomore Matt Elliott, senior Justin Ferrell and freshman Hank Purvis for a third-place finish in the 200 medley relay (1:44.74). Rowcliffe also joined with Ferrell, Elliott and senior Tristan Euritt to place third in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:31.05.
Other top performers included sophomore Matt Dale, who placed second in the 1000 freestyle (10:37.68), while freshman John Covert placed third in the 200 butterfly (2:10.06). VMI picked up fourth-place finishes from Covert in the 100 butterfly (56.90), sophomore Matt Dale in the 200 backstroke (2:04.93) and freshman Marcus Sutter in the 200 breaststroke (2:40.14).
On the diving side, sophomore Dallas Disbro placed second in the one-meter with a 102.20 score.
The men’s swimming & diving team returns to action this Saturday, as Pfeiffer comes to the Clark King Hall Pool for a dual set to begin at 2 p.m. |
