Eagles Crush Florida International
MIAMI, Fla. – The FGCU swimming & diving team continued their strong start to the 2009-10 season, crushing Florida International 205.5-92.5 at the Bay Vista Aquatics Complex on FIU’s Biscayne Bay Campus. Of the 16 events that were held, the Eagles placed first in 13. FGCU’s “D” team captured first place in the day’s first event, the 200 medley relay, finishing in 1:52.13, one second ahead of FGCU’s “A” team. The Eagles also swam well in the only other relay event of the day, the 400 free relay, in which FGCU’s “A” team took first in 3:37.45, followed by FGCU’s “B” team. The Eagles dominated the freestyle events, winning four out of the five races, including sweeps of the top three positions in the 50 free and 200 free. Margie Chamberlin (Land ‘O Lakes, Fla.) won the 50 free in 25.28, followed closed by Dani Beabrun (Vieux Fort, Saint Lucia) and Shannon Blizzard (Jacksonville, Fla.). FGCU’s Myriam Plante (Sainte-Foy, Quebec) won the 200 free, edging out Chamberlin and Kristen Potter (Rockledge, Fla.). Plante also excelled in the breaststroke events, winning the 100 breast in 1:08.37 and the 200 breast in 2:24.63. FGCU also captured victories in both backstroke events, with Vicky Cadge (Long Melford, Suffolk, UK) winning the 100 back in 59.13 and Leah Daniel (Winnipeg, Manitoba) winning the 200 back in 2:12.48. Alex Cianci (Plantation, Fla.) picked up a first-place finish in the 200 fly, finishing with a time of 2:10.61, and Regina Rodriguez (Mexico City, Mexico) won the final individual event of the day, the 200 IM, in 2:16.50. In the diving competitions, Stephanie Young won the 1-meter diving with a score of 216.45, while Karmin McNamara earned a second-place finish in the 3-meter diving with a 201.90. Young was just a couple points behind McNamara with a 199.88. The Eagles will be back at their home pool next week as they host a tri-meet on Friday, October 30th. Florida Atlantic and the University of Tampa will be traveling to Fort Myers to take on FGCU, with the meet set for a 6 p.m. start. Emory 164, Davidson 130
DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Davidson Wildcat men's and women's swimming teams combined for 11 individual titles, but lost the dual meet to the Emory Eagles Saturday afternoon at the Emory Natatorium.
Gardner-Webb Women’s Swimming Falls To UNC Wilmington Friday Afternoon; Competes Against Catawba Saturday Afternoon
BOILING SPRINGS, NC- In what was a busy weekend for the Gardner-Webb women’s swim team, competing Friday afternoon at UNC Wilmington, and then turning around to host Catawba Saturday afternoon, the Lady Bulldogs fell to UNC Wilmington by a score of 140-122, yet was successful against Catawba.
At UNC Wilmington, the team of senior Corey Hughey, junior Rachel Warkentin, and freshmen Kim Zachensky and Elizabeth Charter were victorious in the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:46.92. Both Hughey and Warkentin were victorious in three additional events. Hughey was victorious in the 100 yard backstroke, timing in at 58.16, the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 24.21, and the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 2:06.53. Warkentin placed first in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:56.01, the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:07.00, and the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:08.68. Zachensky won two additional events, winning the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:05.17 and the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:24.14
Against Catawba, Hughey led the team with two wins. Her time of 1:00.94 in the 100 yard butterfly was good enough for first place, and she was part of the winning team in the 200 yard freestyle relay, along with Charter, sophomore Jenna Voelkert, and junior Sarah Steadman, with a time of 1:39.66. Warkentin timed in the quickest in the 200 yard freestyle at 1:57.63, as did Zachensky in the 400 yard IM at 4:46.69.
The Lady Bulldogs will return to action on November 6th as they compete against Limestone in Gaffney, SC at 6:30 PM.
Osprey Claim a Pair of Victories
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida swimming and diving team improved to 3-0 in dual meets as they defeated both College of Charleston and Georgia Southern on Saturday, Oct. 24, in Charleston, S.C. The Ospreys defeated the Cougars 227-68, while edging the Eagles 149-141.
“It is always good to win on the road,” head coach Beth Harrell commented after the meet. “Georgia Southern was our toughest opponent of the day. They jumped out ahead of us early by about 25 points, but we battled back and were able to close it out. I am really proud of our girls and the way that they finished the meet strong.”
UNF won 10 of the 16 events of the meet to claim both victories. The Ospreys were led by junior Lyn Ann Nelson, sophomore Amanda Anderson, sophomore Taylor Crosby and freshman Julia Moomaw.
Nelson won three individual events and took second place in a relay. The junior from Omaha, Neb. collected victories in the 800-meter freestyle, 400 free and the 100 free. Nelson posted an 800 free time of 9:04.74 to win the event by nearly seven seconds. In the 400 free, Nelson posted a time of 4:28.62 to win the event by nearly five seconds. Freshman Caroline Larsson took third place in the 400 free with a time of 4:34.56. Nelson swam the anchor leg of the 200 freestyle relay that finished second with a time of 1:15.80, less than one second back of first.
Anderson claimed victories in the 100 backstroke as well as the 200 back. In the 100 back, Anderson registered a time of 1:06.48 to win the event, while senior teammate Emily Shaw placed third with a time of 1:09.63. Anderson was eight hundredths of a second faster than GSU’s Lindsay Goodman to win the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:23.43. Freshman Kelsey Bobzien placed third in the event with a 2:27.79.
Crosby also won a pair of events, taking top honors in the 100 breaststroke and the 200 breaststroke. The Port Monmouth, N.J. native posted a 100 breaststroke time of 1:16.43 to finish in first place, just 21 hundredths of a second ahead of Georgia Southern’s Ashley White. UNF freshman Sara Evans was a tenth of a second behind White to claim third. Crosby, Evans and freshman Katie England finished first, second and third, respectively, in the 200 breaststroke. The three swimmers were all within one second of each other as Crosby won the even with a time of 2:45.41.
Moomaw, a true freshman from Orlando, Fla., won the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events, competing in her first collegiate meet of the year. In 1-meter diving, Moomaw tallied 228.65 points to win the event by 16.05 points. She out dove two Eagles and five Cougars to win her first collegiate event. Moomaw followed with a narrow victory on the 3-meter board. Moomaw won the 3-meter diving competition with a score of 224.70, just 1.9 points ahead of the second place finisher.
The Ospreys will return to the pool on Saturday, Nov. 7, as UNF welcomes Campbell to the UNFAquatic Center. The dual meet is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
Women’s Swimming & Diving Falls to Pfeiffer, 111-80
LEXINGTON, Va. – Pfeiffer won 11 of 15 events to score a 111-80 win over VMI in non-conference women’s swimming & diving action on Saturday afternoon at the Clark King Hall Pool.
The Keydets, though, netted a pair of varsity relay records, while a rat record also fell on the afternoon. The team of freshman Pin-Fen Chen, freshman Kim Wheeler, junior Chelsea Nugent and sophomore Veronica Lentsch swam a 4:59.66 in the 400 medley relay, while Nugent, freshman Glendon Robertson, Chen and Lentsch teamed for a 1:51.73 in the 200 freestyle relay, each of which set new school marks. Chen also bested the school’s 100 backstroke record by a freshman, swimming a 1:11.73 to beat her own mark by nearly a second-and-a-half.
Nugent took home first-place finishes in the 100 freestyle (59.23) and 50 butterfly (28.88). The Keydets also won the 50 backstroke when Chen touched the wall in 32.69, while junior Briana Allard won the 1-meter diving competition with a score of 141.53.
The Falcons were led by freshmen Yukina Onoda, Julianna Prim, Haley Carter and Samantha Maness, each of whom won multiple events. Onoda took first in the 500 (5:36.61) and 1000 freestyle (12:14.26), while Prim did so in the 100 backstroke (1:00.66) and the 200 freestyle (1:53.64). Carter won both the 50 (43.13) and 100 breaststroke (1:12.05), while Maness captured the 100 butterfly (1:06.93) and the 400 individual medley (4:55.77).
That foursome also took the 400 medley relay with a time of 4:10.58, while the team of Prim, senior Nicole DiVaccaro, Onoda and Manes rounded out the meet by winning the 200 freestyle relay in 1:47.21.
The VMI women’s swimming & diving team returns to action on Friday, competing in a quad-meet at New Jersey Tech.
Campbell Downed in East Carolina Quad-Meet
BUIES CREEK, N.C.--Campbell's swim team (3-5) fell in its quad-meet at East Carolina on Saturday, Oct. 24 in Greenville, N.C. In the only portion that a score was available CU fell to East Carolina by 208-64 margin. Other teams at the meet were Towson and Marshall. Campbell's highest finished of the afternoon was a fifth-place finish in the 200 medley relay by Kelly Mullican, Emily Michael, Casey Umberger and Ashlyn Stumpf (1:53.49). Stumpf also placed seventh in the 50-free with her time of 24.69. Senior Jackie Kenline also finished seventh in the 100-free for Campbell (53.94). The 400-free relay team of Stumpf, Kaitlyn Tunstall, Magda Kedracka and Kenline also placed seventh in their event (3:42.59). Next, Campbell's swimming program heads to Raleigh to take on North Carolina State and Richmond on Oct. 31 at 11 a.m.
