North Florida 151, Florida A&M 25

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida swimming and diving season opened up the 2009-10 season with a win on Saturday, Oct. 10, as they defeated Florida A&M, 151-25, at the Morcom Aquatics Center on the Florida State campus.

The Ospreys had little trouble in the meet as won all nine events they raced, sweeping the top three spots eight events. With a substantial lead heading into the final three events, UNF exhibitioned each of its swimmers.

“I think we did really well,” junior swimmer Allison Fethe commented after the meet. “It was good practice for the rest of the season. It keeps us all positive and looking forward to what’s going to happen the rest of the season. A lot of us swam off events, but that will just make us better and more ready to go later in the year.”

The two teams began the day with the 200-yard medley relay. The Ospreys’ three relay teams all placed with the foursome of senior Emily Shaw, sophomore Taylor Crosby, Fethe and freshman Kelsey Bobzien taking first place with a time of 1:55.45.

Junior Patricia Lanoue, sophomore Amanda Anderson and freshman Margaret Hoynes finished first, second and third, respectively, in the 1,000 free, while Shaw, Taylor Crosby and freshman Kirsten Orndorff finished one, two and three, in that order, in the 200 free. In the 50 free, freshman Caylin Drews won, finishing just ahead of Bobzien. Junior Megan Boudreau claimed third with junior transfer Kalia Martin rounding out the top four.

In the 200 individual medley, the Ospreys once again claimed the top three spots. Junior Lyn Ann Nelson recorded a time of 2:10.41 to claim her first victory of the season. Junior transfer Caroline Larsson took second place with freshman Katie England rounding out the top three.

Drews, Nelson and freshman Ashten Crosby all placed in the 100 butterfly. In the 100 free, Shaw claimed first place with junior Ashley Fernaays taking second place and sophomore Sapphire Hinson earning third.

Anderson took first place in the 100 backstroke, while sophomore Gala Poon claimed second place accolades. Senior captain Krissy Harms also swam in the 100 back, which was the final event the Ospreys received points.

Despite exhibitioning, North Florida had three swimmers place in the 500 free. Freshman Sara Evans, Martin and Bobzien finished first, second and third, respectively, in the event. UNF exhibitioned the 100 breaststroke, but still finished with the three best times in the event, led by Fethe. Sophomore transfer Amanda Singleton finished just behind Fethe, while Ashten Crosby rounded out the top three.

In the final event of the day, the Ospreys’ three freestyle relay teams all placed in the 200 free relay. The event was won by the relay team of Hinson, Drews, Fernaays and Evans.

Delaware 145, Howard 87

NEWARK, DEL. - In their first dual meet action of the season, the Howard University Swimming team traveled to Newark, Delaware to face the Blue Hens of the University of Delaware.  The Bison gave a spirited effort in all of their races and continue their improvement from week to week.  Delaware provided two large and talented squads for the visitors and, in the end, the Blue Hens wound-up taking both contests.  The Howard women lost to the host Blue Hens 157-73 while the men dropped the contest 145-87.

"It was very exciting to get our dual meet season underway against such a formidable program," said head coach Matt Salerno.  "I am very pleased with the toughness our team showed this afternoon.  It is no small feat to have every member of our squad compete and execute four events, but togther, that's the challenge these athletes tackled today."

Indeed, every Bison swimmer competed in the maximum four events, which is very rare for any team.  The highlight of the day came courtesy of senior captain Miguel Orellana.  Orellana took control of the 200 freestyle and powered his way to a 1:44.94 and a first place finish.  Senior Brad Worrell clocked a 1:51.95 and junior Damjan Strbac was right behind with a 1:52.38.

Orellana continued his great meet with a second place finish in the 100 freestyle with a 47.78, just .13 behind Delaware's Hans Gillan.  The senior, again, finished in second place with a very good 100 butterfly swim, clocking a 54.57.

Strbac's 50 freestyle effort notched him second place honors at a time of 22.47 with Worrell right behind in third place at 22.74.   Sophomores Steven Lott and Kelvin Goodman swam great this afternoon, as well.  Lott's swam a 59.39 in his 100 backstroke for a fourth place finish.  Goodman notched his fourth places in the 200 breaststroke and 200 IM with times of  2:30.39 and 2:25.41, respectively.

On the ladies side, Chelsea Andrews turned in three solid performances.  The freshman tallied a second place swim with a 25.09 in the 50 freestyle.  She also notched two fourth place marks in the 200 freestyle (2:00.78) and the 200 IM (2:11.89.)  Fellow freshmen Summer Davis and Cachanda Evans also had strong impacts on the squad.  Davis swam resiliently in the 200 backstroke, 200 butterfly and 500 freestyle, tallied fourth place marks in her 200 fly.  Evans first collegiate competition saw her swim to fourth place honors in the 100 fly.

"We can take a lot of positives from facing Delaware," said Salerno.  We've made tremendous strides in just these first few weeks.  I expect that we'll continue to set the bar high in welcoming the challenges presented before us."

The Bison return to action this Friday when the men and women travel to East Orange, New Jersey to face the Seton Hall Pirates.
