Eight CCSA Teams Compete in Weekend’s Swimming and Diving Meets

Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) foes Gardner-Webb, VMI and North Carolina A&T competed, hosted by the Bulldogs. Gardner-Webb women’s swim team won all 14 events while the men came out on top in 11 events, helping each of the squads defeat VMI and North Carolina A&T. Also on Saturday, the Davidson Wildcat men's and women's swimming and diving teams scored impressive wins against the College of Charleston Cougars at Cannon Natatorium. Competing against two established ACC squads, Campbell fell to Duke 132-92 and dropped a 179-54 decision to Miami. Radford fell to James Madison 130-89, and the FGCU Eagles
Friday, October 24, 2008 Aggies Fall to Davidson in Season Opener
Davidson, N.C. – The North Carolina A&T swimming team opened the 2008-09 season with a loss to Davidson 86-58 in CCSA competition Friday night at Cannon Natatorium.
The Aggie newcomers had superb showings in their first-ever collegiate meet. Freshman Jasmine Gurley had a first-place finish in the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 31.90. Junior Charlisse Rivers, a newcomer out of Charlotte, finished second in the same event with a time of 42.97.
Sophomore Karla Chapman continued the Aggies success in the sprinter events. Chapman had a first-place in the 50-yard breaststroke. Senior Donielle Campbell, a key veteran for the Aggies, came in first in the 50-yard butterfly.
The Aggies are back in action Saturday when they head to Shelby, N.C., to participate in a dual meet with Gardner-Webb and VMI.

Freshman Lauren Kamperman put together a solid meet, winning a pair of individual events. Kamperman finished first in the 100 free with a time of 55.45 and in the 200 free with a time of 1:58.40.
Sophomore Jessica Delegehausen and classmate Lindsey Martin were among the Wildcat winners, out-touching the field in the 50 free (25.83) and 100 IM (1:01.74).
The Wildcat men and women continue their weekend, hosting the College of Charleston Cougars tomorrow at 2 p.m.
Saturday, October 25, 2008 Campbell Swimming Falls to Pair of ACC Foes
DURHAM, N.C. – Competing against two established ACC squads, Campbell fell to Duke 132-92 and dropped a 179-54 decision to Miami. The Camels fell to 2-3 on the year in dual meets while Duke improved to 3-0 this season and Miami is now 4-3 this year.
Heidi Shallow scored the most individual points for the Camels on the afternoon, highlighted by her performance in the 200-breast. Shallow swam a 2:25.38 to finish third behind two swimmers from Miami.
The strongest showing of the day came in 400-free relay for Campbell. The Camels took second and third in the event in their best event of the afternoon. The team of Ashlyn Stumpf, Sarah McSpadden, PJ Jimenez and Jackie Kenline swam a 3:44.31 to finish second in the event.
The Camels will return to the pool in two weeks when they host the College of Charleston and Wingate on Friday November 7. The meet is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. at the Johnson Natatorium.
Bulldogs Dominate In Season-Opening Meet
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb women’s swim team won all 14 events while the men came out on top in 11 events, helping each of the squads topple VMI and North Carolina A&T Saturday in the school’s season-opening meet.
Leading the way for the women’s side were teammates Elizabeth Ketterer and Rachel Warkentin, who each took home two individual titles. Corey Hughey also posted two titles, one of which came in a medley relay. Brianna Bleymaier captured two crowns in the meet, both of which came in relay events.
Starting off the meet, GWU won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:56.25. The quartet that did so was Sarah Steadman, Mallory Baxter, Hughey and Bleymaier.
Next, Kelly Learned took the 1,000 free event in 11:21.33 before Warkentin won her first of two gold medals for the day, coming in the 200 free. Warketin won the event in 1:59.55.
Kelly Gueltig powered home a victory in the 100 back, edging Rachel Glenn for first. Gueltig won in 1:06.88 while Glenn touched the wall not too far behind, in a time of 1:07.73.
Mallory Baxter won the 100 breast in 1:12.01 while Hughey won her second title of the day, coming in the 200 fly (2:31.99).
Ketterer’s first title of the season came in the 50 free as she won in 25.27. Two events later, she won the 200 back in 2:17.07. Sandwiched between her victories was one by Steadman, who took the 100 free crown in 55.77.
Sarah Stokes’ time of 2:42.53 in the 200 breast was a gold-medal effort while Warkentin pounded home another victory in the 500 free (5:18.10). Hillary Leonard and Carrie Kibler won the 100 fly (1:02.38) and 200 IM (2:20.20), respectively, setting up the Bulldogs’ chance to win every event as they headed into the 200 free relay.
The foursome of Stokes, Victoria Bryant, Stepheni Stadnik and Bleymaier didn’t disappoint either. The squad’s time of 1:48.05 in the event edged out another GWU team for first place.
The Bulldogs return to action Friday at 5 p.m., when they compete at American.
For VMI on the women’s side, sophomore Chelsea Nugent (Glendale, Calif.) placed second in the 50 (27.42) and 100 (1:01.20) freestyle events while swimming leadoff for the team’s 200 freestyle relay. The team of Nugent, Stephanie Ortiz, Lizanne Carlos and Veronica Lentsch came in with a 2:01.92, placing third in the event.
The women’s swimming and diving team returns to action on Saturday, playing host to Radford at 1 p.m. at the Clark King Pool. The men’s team will next compete the following weekend, taking part in the Thomas Murphy Invitational, hosted by Loyola in Baltimore.
College of Charleston swimming falls to Davidson despite strong individual performances
DAVIDSON, N.C. – Junior Greg Greer (Clemmons N.C.) and junior Cassie Tubb (Swedesboro, N.J.) each collected a pair of first place finishes and junior Randy Buchanan (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) took second in four events as the College of Charleston Swimming and Diving teams each dropped decisions to Davidson in Davidson, N.C. The men’s team fell 164-123 while the women finished the dual meet at 184-111.
Tubb secured her top finishes with a time of 1:11.32 in the 100-yard breaststroke and a mark of 2:35.15 in the 200-yard breaststroke. She also was instrumental in Charleston’s second place finish in the 400-yard medley relay (4:08.57), swimming the second leg of the event.
On the women’s side, freshman Clare Sweeney (Greenville, S.C.) headlined a 1-2-3-4 sweep in the 200-yard individual medley (2:22.94) with freshman Kayln Cogswell (2:26.95), Caitlin Shepard (2:28.68) and senior Lizzy LaScala (2:30.27) placing in order. Sophomore Megan Sayles (Winston-Salem, N.C.) earned a first-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:12.13 and took second in the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.53). She also swam the first leg of the Cougars second-place 400-yard medley relay team (4:08.57)
Morgan Hall swam the third leg of that race and added a second-place performance in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:00.47. She was also the third swimmer in the pool on Charleston’s top finishing 400-yard freestyle relay team (3:49.04). Freshmen Haley Horkey and Lara Brandfass and sophomore Brittany Dahn rounded out that team.
Sophomore Sara Gardocki (Suffield, Conn.) added a second-place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:32.80 and a third-place performance in the 500-yard freestyle (5:15.48). She also anchored the Cougars runner-up 400-yard freestyle relay team (4:00.55).
As a unit, the Cougars’ men’s program fell to Davidson 164-123 while the women dropped a 184-111 decision.
Following a week off, Charleston will be back in action on Friday, November 7 in Buies Creek, N.C. The men will take on Wingate while the women will face Wingate and Campbell with both meets slated to start at 4:00 p.m.
For Davidson, in an early-season test, both the Wildcat men's and women's swimming and diving teams scored impressive wins against the College of Charleston Cougars Saturday afternoon at Cannon Natatorium.
The Wildcat women, defending CCSA Champions, won the dual-meet with a score of 184-111, while the men downed the defending champion Cougars, 164-123.
Sophomores Anna Stringfield, Lindsey Martin and Emily Castle turned in standout performances. Stringfield won the 200 freestyle (1:54.55) and the 500 free (5:05.82), while Martin won the 50 free (23.93) and 100 free (53.28). Castle won a pair of events, the 100 back (1:02.23) and the 100 fly (58.19), and each contributed to winning relays.
Classmate Jessica Delgehausen won the 1000 freestyle, finishing with a time of 10:26.85, the second fastest in Davidson history.
Other individual event winners for the women's team included freshman Lauren Kamperman (200 fly, 2:11.51), junior Kelsey Chisholm (1-meter diving, 219.23) and senior Stephannie McKinney (3-meter diving, 222.45).
The Wildcats will return to action next Saturday, when they host Emory at 1 p.m. at Cannon Natatorium.
Radford Falls to James Madison 130-89
HARRISONBURG, VA. – Junior Mandy Smith (Annandale, Va.) and sophomores Kate Keck (Millersville, Pa) and Anna Millotte (Sterling, Va.) all recorded personal best. Also, Katie Shaffer (Virginia Beach, Va.) re-broke her own school records in both the three-meter and one-meter diving events as Radford’s swimming and diving team fell to in-state rival James Madison 130-89 on Saturday afternoon at Savage Natatorium.
Smith tallied a personal best in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 58.49, beating her old personal best by fourteen tenths of a second. Keck placed fourth in the in the 100-yard freestyle and recorded her personal best of 57.70. Millotte also tallied her personal best in the 100-yard freestyle, with a time of 1:00.36, which beat her old personal best by thirty-five tenths of second.
Shaffer re-broke her previous school records in each of the diving events. She place third in the one-meter with a score of 187.43 beating her old mark by 12 points and placed third in the three-meter with a score of 221.63, which beat her old record by 16 points.
Freshmen Whitney Friend (Charlottesville, Va.) placed second in the 1,000 meter freestyle with a time of 12:08.14. Friend was the highest finisher for the Highlanders.
The Highlanders will be back in action on November 1 when they face VMI and Howard.
Eagle's Defeat FIU 148-84 FORT MYERS, Fla. - The FGCU Eagles are victorious after another strong performance; beating FIU 148 to 84. The Eagles recorded a clean sweep in the pool, placing first in every swimming event they participated in. For a third straight meet, the 200 yard Medley Relay team comprised of Viktoria Hyddmark, Vicky Cadge, Margie Chamberlin, and Rachael Rein had the Eagles ahead early after only one event.
Freshman Vicky Cadge paced the Eagles throughout the meet recording both school and pool records in the 200 yard IM (2:06.19) and the 200 yard Breaststroke (2:23.41).
FGCU’s Taylor Cooke took first place in the long distance freestyle events with a 10:30.12 in the 1000 yard Free and a 5:10.11 in the 500 Free.
The Eagles swept first, second, and third place in the 200 yard IM, 100 yard Free, and the 500 yard Free.
FGCU divers were lead by Gaby Shaw who finished with a score of 207.30 on the 1 meter board and 172.72 on the 3 meter board.
The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday, November 22, 2008, when they take on in state rival Florida Atlantic and Division II powerhouse University of Tampa in a tri-meet at the FGCU Aquatics Center. |
