Winthrop Hosts Annual Big SURS Event This Weekend


Big SURS student researchers will present their research in oral and poster sessions on the campus starting Friday afternoon, April 13 and ending on Saturday afternoon, April 14. The topics cover the arts and sciences, education, business and visual and performing arts. The symposium also will include student networking receptions hosted by Winthrop student organizations and a faculty workshop on mentoring and promoting undergraduate research, according to Winthrop organizer Dwight Dimaculangan, biology professor and director of undergraduate research. More than 300 students are involved in the symposium.

The Big South Athletic Conference higher education institutions participating are: Campbell University, Coastal Carolina University, Gardner‐Webb University, High Point University, Presbyterian College, Radford University, University of North Carolina Asheville, Virginia Military Institute and Winthrop. Also attending are students from: Appalachian State University, Davidson College, College of Charleston, Mercer University, Queens University, University of North Carolina Charlotte, University of North Carolina Greensboro, Western Carolina University and Wofford College.

Keynote speaker Tiffany Barnes, an associate professor of computer science at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, will speak at 4 p.m. April 12 in the Richardson Ballroom in the DiGiorgio Campus Center. She specializes in educational data mining and using games to improve learning.

In addition, there is a graduate school fair and the Winthrop University Galleries will host an Intercollegiate Juried Art Exhibition in the Lewandowski Student Gallery, McLaurin Hall. The exhibition will run April 2 - 13 and will culminate with a reception at the Winthrop Galleries on the opening day of the symposium.

This exhibition will explore research and investigation as it relates to the visual arts. Students from a variety of disciplines will have an opportunity to display their work and achievements in the fields of art and design in an academic setting.

ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Hundreds of students from 18 colleges and universities will arrive at Winthrop University April 13-14 to present their work during the fifth annual Big South Undergraduate Research Symposium (Big SURS).
