Jackie Jenkins twirled a three-hit shutout as Radford defeated UNCG, 2-0 in the night cap and earned a split on Tuesday evening at RU Softball Field. In the opener, the Spartans (17-28) edged the Highlanders (25-14), 4-3, in nine innings.

Jenkins (11-6) scattered three singles, struck out one and did not walk a batter as she tossed her third shutout of the season. She was helped offensively by sophomore Jessie Hutchens, who homered and knocked in both of Radford's runs.

Hutchens put the Highlanders on the board with two-out solo home run in the second. Her shot to left center was her third of the season. She pushed across her second run of the contest with a RBI ground out in the fourth

Jenkins got into a little bit of trouble in the sixth when UNCG put runners on the corners with no outs on a single and a throwing error. However back-to-back fielder's choice grounders and a liner to short ended the threat.

In game one, Nichole Beall went 3-for-3 with two doubles, a home run, two RBI and two runs scored and Radford pitching held UNCG to two hits, but the Highlanders stranded 10 runners and fell 4-3 in nine innings.

Beall finished the day with three doubles, her third one in game two was the 50th in her career, and 10 total bases, which puts her one shy of tying the program record of 436 held by Kristen Shifflett (2008-11).

Radford held a 3-1 lead after five, but three walks and a two-run single by Eileen Horsmon evened the game in the sixth.

Horsmon knocked in the game-winning run with a sac fly in the ninth. She finished 2-for-3 with a double and all four RBI, while the rest of her team was 0-for-23. Cory Mattson went the distance for the Spartans, scattering six hits, walking five and striking out five.

Radford scored single runs in the first and third innings to grab a 2-0 lead. A RBI groundout by junior Ryndee Ruch put the Highlanders on the board. Beall added to it with a solo home run in the third, her 10th of the season.

The Spartans took advantage of a two-out walk and their first hit of the game, a RBI double by Eileen Horsmon, to cut the Highlanders' lead to 2-1 in the fourth.

Beall knocked her second run of the game and made it 3-1 with a RBI double to right, which plated senior Hannah Ojeda, who led off the fifth inning with a triple down the rightfield line.

Horsmon struck again in the top of the sixth with her game-tying two-run single. With the bases loaded after three walks, Horsmon bounced one just out of the reach of Beall at short and into shallow left.

Emily Norton took the loss. She did not allow an earned run and struck out two in 3.2 innings.  Micalah Sacre started and lasted 5-plus innings. She surrendered two runs on two hits with five strikeouts and two walks.

Radford turns around and hosts Virginia Tech tomorrow at 7:00pm.
