Presbyterian's Volleyball Team Bested by Furman



The Presbyterian College volleyball team traveled up the road to Greenville, S.C., this afternoon to take on Southern Conference rival Furman.  The Blue Hose rallied at several points during the match, but fell to the Paladins, 3-0 (20-25, 18-25,11-25)

PC falls to 2-10, while Furman improves to 10-3.

Leading the Blue Hose was Rachel Hall with nine kills.  She was followed by Presley Mabrey and Kelly Berryman with seven apiece.  Ashtin Frank recorded 25 assists while Mary Trimpe posted a team-leading 17 digs.

PC posted 32 kills, compared to 51 for Furman.  The Paladins held the dig advantage, 48-41, and had three more blocks, 7.0-4.0.

After a back and forth battle early in game one, the Blue Hose found themselves tied with the Paladins, 9-9.  Furman broke open a close game with a 12-6 run to build a 21-15 lead.  PC cut the margin to four, 20-24, off a Hall kill, but Furman responded with a kill of its own to end the Blue Hose threat, taking the 25-20 win.

Ahead by just two, 8-6, Furman used six straight points, four of those kills, to jump up to a 14-6 lead in game two.  PC cut the margin to three, 19-16, capitalizing on four PC kills, before the Paladins scored the next six of eight points to win game two, 25-18.

Tied 5-5 in game three, Furman used two kills, a service ace and a PC attack error to increase its lead to four, 9-5.  PC won the next two of three points to cut the margin to three, 7-10, before Furman rattled off three straight, capitalizing on two PC errors, to build a six-point 13-7 lead.

After a PC timeout, Furman continued its run with four more, as part of a 7-0 run to take the 17-7 lead.  A Mabrey kill knocked he deficit back to nine, but Furman responded with another kill to increase the lead back to 10, 18-8.  The Paladins outscored the Blue Hose 9-3 down the stretch to take the 25-11 win.

PC travels to Charleston, S.C. to take part in the Holiday Inn Charleston/Mt. Pleasant Tournament, hosted by the College of Charleston Sept. 14-15.  The Blue Hose take on Michigan State Friday at 4:30p.m., before playing the host Cougars Saturday at 12:00 p.m. PC rounds out the tournament with a 4:30 p.m. match against Georgetown.
