LU Men Sit No. 1 After Day One of Indoor Championship

BLACKSBURG, VA. (www.BigSouthSports.com) - The Liberty men go into day two on top at the 2012 Big South Indoor Track Championships presented by Musco Lighting and UCS. The Flames posted 75 points on Thursday at the Rector Fieldhouse on the campus of Virginia Tech.
In the first final of the day, the men's open pole vault, Kolby Shepherd of Liberty took home the gold medal with a meet-record jump of 16' 5.25". Liberty's Cody Fridgen and Jon Drablos each cleared 15' 4.50". Fridgen posted less misses to break the tie and take second, giving Drablos the bronze medal.
Jacob Smith scored a first-place finish for High Point as he clocked in at 8:20.71 to take home the gold in the 3,000-meter event. Caleb Edmonds of Liberty broke the tape in 8:21.49 to place second. Winthrop's Adam Freudenthal rounded out the top three with a time of 8:23.04.
The men's triple jump finished with Ademola Titcombe of VMI in the No. 1 position with a jump of 48' 3.50". Avery Coe from Charleston Southern finished as the runner-up with a leap of 47' 11". Lavon Allen of CSU took home the bronze with a mark of 47' 3.50".
Ryan Smith brought home the weight throw title for Liberty as he cleared 63' 6.25". Gardner-Webb's Travis Rodgers' throw of 61' 9" was good for second, while teammate Carson Sears claimed third with a mark of 60' 4.50".
Winthrop took home the men's distance medley with a time of 10:09.91. Campbell secured the silver with a time of 10:10.18. High Point finished in third with a time of 10:12.30. Campbell's silver marked the school's first-ever Big South Indoor Track and Field All-Conference honors.
Half way through the heptathlon VMI's Antonio Wood sits on top with 3,038 points. Phillip Hovatter is currently second with 2804 points, while Tristan Faure of High Point is closes out the top three with 2,794 points.
Milan Ristic of UNC Asheville tied the Big South Conference 60-meter hurdles record as he qualified No. 1 with a time of 7.83.
