Liberty Continues Quiz Bowl Run

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Liberty University captured its third consecutive Big South Quiz Bowl Tournament with a narrow victory over the weekend.  Liberty, the host school for this year's event, won a tiebreaker over teams from Gardner-Webb University and Virginia Military Institute.  Other students participating in the academic question-and-answer contest came from Big South Conference members Charleston Southern University, High Point University, Radford University, UNC Asheville, and Winthrop University.  The event is an outgrowth of the Conference's Academic Consortium, designed to develop institutional relationships outside of athletics.

The student teams competed throughout the day Saturday in timed head-to-head challenges.  The topics ranged from computer science and mathematics to history and literature--with dashes of pop culture and sports thrown in along the way, so that well-rounded knowledge among the team members proved to be the greatest asset for tournament success.  Teams received wins and losses for each match, with the day's total record meant to decide the winner.

As it turned out, in this year's event the win-loss record would not be enough, as Liberty, future Big South member Gardner-Webb, and VMI all tied at 5-2 for the day.  In addition, each team had the same results against the other tied squads (1-1).  That left total points scored as the next tiebreaker, and Liberty had the honor over the other teams at the top.

The Liberty Flames Quiz Bowl Team included contributions from Kelly Hamren, Zachary Curtis, Robert Mullis, Nicholas Orta, and Sara Davis-Leonard.  Of that group, only Hamren and Curtis competed in all seven matches, with Curtis leading his team in scoring for the day (165 points).  Gardner-Webb's Seth Huber is credited with leading all individual scorers in the competition (310 points).

The Big South Conference's Academic Consortium's mission is to develop institutional relationships outside of athletics and to explore ways to share programs and resources to the benefit of students and member institutions.  In addition to developing the College Quiz Bowl into and annual event, the Consortium is planning the Conference's second Undergraduate Research Symposium among Big South member institutions.
