Lady Flames On Top After Day One of Indoor Championship

BLACKSBURG, VA. (www.BigSouthSports.com) - The Lady Flames go into day two on top at the 2012 Big South Indoor Track Championships presented by Musco Lighting and UCS.  The Liberty women notched 81 points on Thursday at the Rector Fieldhouse on the campus of Virginia Tech.

In the first final of the day, the pentathlon, Kristen Hurley of Gardner-Webb finished on top with 3,318 points.  Patria Norman of Charleston Southern finished second with 3,283 points.  Audrey Bamford of Liberty rounded out the list of All-Conference honorees with 3,056 points.

Liberty swept the All-Conference honors in the 3,000-meter event.  Jennifer Klugh won her second-straight 3,000-meter title with a time of 10:03.29.  Jacy Christiansen claimed second as she clocked in at 10:09.43.  Khristina Kanagy took third with a time of 10:09.90.

The women's open pole vault finished with Jennifer Sing of VMI in first-place with a school-record jump of 12' 10".  Anne Marie Howell of Gardner-Webb and Kate Collins of VMI each posted a leap of 12' 4".  Howell claimed second via the tie-breaker as Collins garnered the bronze.

Coastal Carolina's Kierra Gabe claimed the triple jump as she turned in a mark of 40' 2.75".  Mia Aghaji of Liberty placed second with a jump of 40' 2.25".  Tamisha Foster closed out the All-Conference honorees with a mark of 40' 0.50".

Radford's Aimee Veatch claimed the gold medal in the women's weight throw with a mark of 60' 3" and Melinda Bendick of Liberty took second with a throw of 56' 9.5".  Jocelyn William wrapped up the All-Conference honorees with a throw of 56' 6.75".

Ashley Matthews, Tiana Teague, Lynette Akai and Samantha Robbins became Campbell's first-ever Big South Indoor Track and Field Champions as they turned in a meet record time of 12:07.81 in the women's distance medley.  Liberty claimed second with a time of 12:14.49 and Coastal Carolina rounded the list out with a time of 12:17.05.
