Horn Tabbed Lowe's Senior Class Academic All-America

ROCK HILL, SC-Winthrop senior men's soccer player Matt Horn has been named to the Lowe's Senior Class Award All-America Second Team, announced Friday evening.

Horn, a finalist for the Lowe's Senior Class Award, was a three-year starter for the Eagle soccer team and has garnered a few academic awards over the last two seasons.

The award, chosen by a nationwide vote of Division I men's soccer coaches, national soccer media and fans, is given annually to the most outstanding senior student-athlete in NCAA Division I men's soccer. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition.

Creighton goalkeeper Brian Holt, who helped lead the Bluejays to a No. 2 national ranking and the NCAA Men's College Cup®, was selected as the 2011 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award winner in NCAA® Division I men's soccer.

In addition to his selection to the second team, Horn was named to the Capital One Academic All-America First Team within the last week and also earned NSCAA Academic Team All-Region honors. He is a two-time Big South All-Academic Team selection and a 2010 NSCAA University Men Scholar All-South Region Second Team selection. In addition to his honors for soccer and academics, he's a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society and the Book and Key Honor Society. In the spring of 2011, Horn was awarded the Griffin-Guettler Award for Winthrop's male athlete with the highest GPA, the Ken Stanton award for going above and beyond the call of duty in leadership, the Big South Conference Student-Athlete of the Year Award in 2010 and Winthrop's Student Life Award for Student Service Project of the Year that involved Samaritan's Feet Initiative (award presented to Winthrop's SAAC 2010).

This past season Horn started 17 of the 18 games he played in and finished the season with an assist from his defensive position. He played in 72 games with 42 career starts for the Eagles.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
