High Point Picked to Win Men Cross Country Crown


CHARLOTTE, N.C. (BigSouthSports.com) - The High Point men's cross country squad has been chosen first in the Big South Conference's annual preseason polls by the League's head cross country coaches, it was announced today by the Conference office.

The Panthers, who are looking to win their first Big South Men's Cross Country Championship since winning three-straight titles from 2002-04, garnered eight first-place votes to finish with 118 points.  Liberty, the reigning six-time Big South Champion, received two top bids and 108 points to finish second in the poll.  In third was VMI one No. 1 vote and 103 points, ahead of Winthrop, who received 80 points.  Big South newcomer Campbell landed in the No. 5 position with 71 points, followed by Radford with 58 points and Coastal Carolina with 57 points.  UNC Asheville found itself at No. 8 as it received 50 points in the voting.  Charleston Southern (36 points), Gardner-Webb (32 points) and Presbyterian College (13 points) rounded out the voting for the men.

The cross country season opens up Sept. 2 with nine teams in action.  The Big South Men's and Women's Cross Country Conference Championships are slated for Saturday, Oct. 29, and will be hosted by Coastal Carolina.  The preseason polls appear below.
