GWU and RU Women's Tennis Win Friday
Radford 7, South Dakota State 0
Radford continued its perfect Spring Break trip to the Sunshine State with a 7-0 blanking of South Dakota in non-conference women's tennis action Friday afternoon.
In addition to their third straight victory, the Highlanders have won eight of their last 10 to improve to 9-4 overall.
The Coyotes, who entered on a nine-match winning streak, fall to 10-4 on the spring.
After sweeping the doubles portion, Radford won all six singles matches, including two in three sets.
The Highlanders' singles victories came from Petra Dajevic, Hannah Crawford, Mia Drobnjak, Gemma Valls, Taylor Newman and Meg Napolitano.
Radford will conclude its Spring Break with a 9:00am contest against North Dakota Saturday morning.
Gardner-Webb 4, Liberty 3
Junior Erica White grinded out a 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4) win with the match on the line to propel Gardner-Webb women's tennis to a dramatic 4-3 win over Liberty on the road Friday.
The Runnin' Bulldogs improve to 6-4 (2-1) this season.
GWU got doubles wins at No. 1 and No. 3 to secure a 1-0 lead over the Flames early in the match. The Runnin' Bulldog tandem of Ioana Oprea and Jenny Lunde took an 8-0 win over Liberty's Alexandra Sheeran/Carol Lobel at No. 1 doubles. GWU got the clinching win at No. 3 thanks to an 8-2 win from Erica White and Ronia Hutterli, as the duo cruised to a win over the Flames' Rebekah Jenkins/Jessie Boda.
At No. 2 singles, freshman Alice Hopkins won her 7th straight singles match, taking a 6-2, 6-0 decision over Cameron Richard. Hopkins, undefeated in Big South singles thus far in 2012, has posted a 9-1 overall singles record this season.
After Liberty took the win at No. 3 singles to cut Gardner-Webb's lead to 2-1, Lunde completed a 6-4, 6-4 win over Jenkins at the No. 4 position.
White got the clinching point for GWU, outlasting Sheeran at No. 1 to earn a 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4) triumph. The junior's 9 singles wins in 2012 ties for the team lead.
Gardner-Webb will look to continue keep its current three match winning streak going over spring break, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will play three matches at Hilton Head, S.C. next week. GWU faces Siena as well as Savannah State on Monday, March 12, and plays SUNY-Buffalo on Tuesday, March 13.
Charleston Southern Match Shortened
The Charleston Southern women's tennis teams snagged a pair of singles wins over No. 67 UNC Wilmington on Friday afternoon at the Buccaneer Tennis Center, but rain postponed the match before it could be completed.
Olga Makhova notched a victory at No. 1 singles for the Bucs, downing the Seahawks' Christina Lee 6-4, 6-1. Angelica Sidorenko and Marija Dzakovic were unable to win their matches, but Yvonne Hubler continued her stellar play at the number three spot as she picked up a 6-4, 6-3 triumph.
CSU heads back to action on Saturday at 1:00pm against UNC Greensboro. The match had originally been scheduled for 10:00am., but has been moved to the afternoon due to the expectation of strong winds in the morning.
