Coastal Women On Top After Day One of T&F Championship

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina women lead after the first day of the 2012 Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships presented by Musco Lighting and UCS. The Chanticleers posted 54 points at Doug Shaw Stadium in Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Thursday afternoon.

In the first final of the day, the women's hammer throw, Liberty's Melinda Bentick took home the gold medal with a throw of 189' 7".  Coastal Carolina's Shantelle Patterson placed second with a mark of 179' 1".  Jessica Dunston of Campbell rounded out the list of All-Big South performers in the event with a throw of 175' 9".

Erica Peake of Coastal Carolina claimed the women's open long jump with a leap of 19' 1.50".  Kierra Gabe of Coastal Carolina and Liberty's Mia Aghaji finished with identical jumps of 18' 10.50".  Gabe took second via the tie-breaker procedure as Aghaji took home the bronze medal. Christina Mitchell of Liberty grabbed the Big South Championship in the javelin with a throw of 144' 7".  In second was Carolina Arledge of Gardner-Webb with a distance of 131' 11".  Ashlei Clodfelter of UNC Asheville took home the bronze in the event with a mark of 129' 10".

Coastal Carolina's Letitia Saayman claimed the gold medal in the 10K with a time of 36:30.13.  Khristina Kanagy of Liberty clocked in at 36:33.99 to finish second.  Melanie Kulesz rounded out the list of All-Conference honorees with a time of 36:56.61.

Halfway through the heptathlon, Jasmine King is currently No. 1 with 2,878 points.  In second is Christina Mitchell of Liberty with 2,718 points.  Rounding out the top three is Kristen Hurley of Gardner-Webb with 2,618.

Day two of the 2012 Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships presented by Musco Lighting and UCS will start on Friday, April 20 at noon.
