Coastal Earns 3-0 Win on Senior Day Over South Carolina State
CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina volleyball team won 3-0 during their final home match of the 2011 season against South Carolina State on Tuesday, Nov. 1. The Chanticleers improved to 11-18 on the season with the victory.
Seniors Simone Autry, Erika Lightsey and Kelsie Mauck were honored following the match for their contributions to the Coastal Carolina volleyball team during the past four years.
During the first set of play the score would remain close until sophomores Kindra Bailey and Lauren Alejo each recorded a kill and South Carolina State posted an attack error to give Coastal the 12-9 advantage. The Chanticleers used a 6-2 run to extend their lead to 20-15. Coastal ended the match with their largest lead of the set following a kill by Lightsey who gave the Chanticleers the 25-18 victory.
The Bulldogs took the early 2-1 lead in the second set, but Lightsey would put the Chanticleers ahead at 3-2 after recording a kill. Freshman Katie Martin gave the Chants a three point advantage when she tallied a kill to put the score at 7-4. South Carolina State fought back and tied the set up at eight apiece when Coastal posted an attack error. The Chants used a 9-2 run to build up a 17-10 lead. The Bulldogs were only able to pull within four points before Coastal took the 25-19 win.
South Carolina State had a strong showing in the early stages of the third set, as they went ahead 5-1. Coastal regrouped and used a 6-2 run to tie the match up at 8-8. The Bulldogs regained the lead on the ensuing point and would build up a three point advantage. The Chants fought back again and tied the set up at 13-13 following a kill by freshman Lian Bernett on an assist by Mauck. South Carolina State faltered on the next point and Coastal took their first lead of the third set. The Chants went ahead by as many as four points before the Bulldogs tied the match for the fourth time at 22 apiece on a service ace by Desire Waller. Waller put South Carolina State ahead on the next point following her second straight ace. Lightsey and Martin each recorded a kill on the next two points and the Chants would take the 25-23 win following an attack error by the Bulldogs.
Leading the way for Coastal in kills was Lightsey and Martin who each finished with 12. Lightsey also had a team high two service aces, while Martin tallied six blocks. Sophomore Lindsay Gill grabbed 10 digs for the Chants and fellow classmate Sam Skryd posted 23 assists on the evening.
Waller led the way for the Bulldogs with 11 kills and three service aces. Melissa Robinson had 18 digs and Shabree Roberson ended the match with two blocks. Bria Brimmer led the team in assists with 27.
Next for Coastal will be a match against Big South Conference opponent Charleston Southern on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 6 p.m. in Charleston, S.C.
