Coastal Carolina Wins 2011 Women's Track and Field Crown

LEXINGTON, VA. - Coastal Carolina took home the 2011 Big South Women's Outdoor Track and Field title, on the final day of action at the 2011 Big South Outdoor Track and Field Championships, presented by UCS and Musco Lighting and hosted by VMI in Lexington, Va.  The Coastal Carolina victory ended Liberty's nearly two-year  reign with all the team titles in the conference, as the LU squad had captured all the team titles in track and cross country both in 2009-10 and so far this year.

Coastal's 228 points were 61.5 better than Liberty's 166.5. Charleston Southern was third once again, finishing with 83 points, while High Point had 81. Gardner-Webb was fifth at 77.5 markers, while Winthrop (62.5), Radford (47.5), UNC Asheville (38) and VMI (33) completed the standings.

For the women, Natalie Pearson of UNC Asheville was the Most Outstanding Track Performer, as she swept the 100 and 200-meter dashes. Pearson was joined in the awards area by Most Outstanding Field Performer Patria Norman of Charleston Southern, who was fifth in the 100-meter hurdles, fourth in the shot put, second in the heptathlon and also claimed her second straight conference long jump title.

Mary Grace Lemon of VMI earned the Women's Freshman of the Year honor after her victory in the discus throw. That marks the first time a VMI competitor has earned that honor.

Alan Connie of Coastal Carolina was the conference's Women's Coach of the Year and Carrie Long from Gardner-Webb was tabbed the Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
