Coastal Carolina Volleyball Bested by South Carolina

The Coastal Carolina volleyball team fell 3-0 at home against in-state rival South Carolina.  The match marked the first visit to Conway by the Gamecocks and also the final non-conference contest of the season for the Chanticleers. Coastal will return to Big South play this weekend where they currently sit atop the standings.

The Chanticleers pushed the Gamecocks throughout the first set but South Carolina pulled out the late victory 25-22.  The Gamecocks cruised to victories in the second and third sets 25-16 and 25-11.

Coastal was led by freshman Eszter Nagy who had nine kills, a dig and two block assists.  Junior Kindra Bailey added six kills, a pair of service aces and two block assists.  Junior Meghan Laffin and freshman Gabriella Horvath each added seven kills and a pair of block assists.  Junior Lauren Alejo led the team with 27 assists while Sam Skryd led the team in digs with 13.

The team hit for a .150 average and had four total blocks.

The Gamecocks were led by Juliette Thevenin who had 14 kills, 12 digs and a pair of blocks.  Bethanie Thomas added 13 kills, five digs and a block assist.

The Gamecocks hit for a .349 average and had seven total blocks.

The Chanticleers jumped out to the early lead in the first set taking a 7-3 lead.  The Chants held onto the lead until a kill by Thevenin tied the set at 16.  The set went back-and-forth from that point on until with the score tied at 22 the Gamecocks scored three-straight points off of a pair of kills and a service ace to take the 25-22 victory.

The second set started off much like the first as the Chants jumped out to a 5-3 lead but a 9-4 run by the Gamecocks switched the lead to their favor at 12-9.  South Carolina then pulled away down the stretch to take a 25-16 second set win.

The third set was all South Carolina as the Gamecocks jumped out to a 10-4 lead and never looked back.  The Chants cut the lead to five on two occasions but South Carolina was able to pull away and take a 25-13 victory.

Coastal will return to action this Friday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. as the Chants travel to Boiling Springs, N.C. to take on Gardner-Webb in Big South Conference action.
