NINETY-SIX, S.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) - Coastal Carolina shot an opening round 286 to take a five-stroke lead over Winthrop in the 2010 Big South Men's Golf Championship, which is being contested at The Patriot Golf Club at Grand Harbor (par 72, 7,079 yards) in Ninety-Six, S.C.  The Eagles are second at 291, six shots ahead of host High Point (297).  Overall, just 12 shots separate the top five teams on the leaderboard.

The first round featured mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the high 60s-to-low 70s.  Presbyterian College's Matt Sizemore carded the lowest score of the day with a school-record 7-under par 65 (33-32).  He played bogey-free on the front nine with three birdies, and tallied five birdies on the back nine.  Three other players shot in the 60s on Monday.  Coastal Carolina's Dan Obremski fired a 5-under 67 (33-34) to lead the Chanticleers.  He also was bogey-free with three birdies on the front nine, and finished 1-under on the back nine with three birdies as well.  Charleston Southern's Kelvin Day (36-33) and High Point's D.J. Dougherty (32-37) were next at 3-under 69.  Day had three of his four birdies on the back nine, while Dougherty opened his round with two-straight birdies and four on the front.

Winthrop had two players under par on Monday with Jordan Sease (70) and Kamito Hirai (71) pacing the Eagles' team aggregate 291.  Hirai eagled the par 5, 527-yard No. 8 hole for the lone eagle of the first round.  Coastal Carolina's Sam Lyons also finished under par with a 71.

Radford and Charleston Southern are tied for fourth-place with a 298, followed in the standings by Liberty (304) and Gardner-Webb (314).  Presbyterian College finished the first round with a team aggregate score of 300, but the Blue Hose's results do not officially count in the individual or team standings as part of its transition process to Division I.
