LYNCHBURG, Va. - Liberty redshirt senior distance runner Sam Chelanga has been included on the official preseason watch list for the 2011 awarding of The Bowerman, as announced today by The Bowerman Men's Watch Committee, in conjunction with the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Chelanga, a 10-time All-American, won his second consecutive NCAA Division I cross country national title in November. However, The Bowerman will only encompass athletes' accomplishments during the 2011 indoor and outdoor track & field campaigns, which will be Chelanga's final two seasons in a Liberty uniform.

In 2010, Chelanga's top achievements on the track came at the 10K distance. At the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships, he earned his first track & field national championship in the 10K final, outdistancing the runner-up by 18 seconds. It was the widest margin of victory in the men's 10K at the NCAA national meet since 2002.

Chelanga also raced to a 27:08.39 clocking in the 10K, May 1 at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational, lopping 20 seconds off of his own collegiate record and achieving the fourth-fastest time in the world in 2010.

He finished as the national runner-up in the 5K at both the 2010 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships and the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships, losing the two races by a total of 1.14 seconds. Those are the only two times he was defeated by a collegiate track & field runner in 2010.

About The Bowerman
The Bowerman, which debuted in 2009, is presented annually to the top male and female collegiate track & field athletes in the nation. Oregon's Ashton Eaton and Virginia Tech's Queen Harrison are the reigning winners of The Bowerman, which is named for legendary Oregon track & field/cross country coach Bill Bowerman.

The Bowerman Advisory Board appointed four of its members to comprise The Bowerman Men's Watch Committee and another four of its members to make up The Bowerman Women's Watch Committee. The committee will release its next men's update on Feb. 9. The three men and three women finalists will be named in late June.
