Charleston Southern Edges Coastal Carolina, 4-3
Charleston Southern 4, Coastal Carolina 3
The Charleston Southern tennis team rallied for a fifth consecutive victory and sent seniors Olga Makhova and Marija Dzakovic out with a win in their final home match as the Bucs clipped Coastal Carolina, 4-3, at Buccaneer Tennis Center on Wednesday afternoon.
CSU (14-3, 7-1) dropped all three doubles matches, but rebounded to take four of the six singles matches and get the better of their Palmetto State rival. Coastal (13-5, 6-2) entered in a tie for second-place with CSU, and the Bucs' triumph assured them of at least a second place standing in next week's Conference tournament. A Winthrop loss to Presbyterian on Friday would give CSU a share of the Big South regular-season title.
Makhova set the tone at number one singles, cruising past Miki Bunea 6-1, 6-1, to improve her singles mark to 11-4 for the campaign. The Chanticleers claimed victories at number two and four singles, but CSU freshman Yvonne Hubler kept the singles bout tied at 2 apiece with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Coastal's Katie Fosnacht out of the number three set.
Hubler's win gave Alexandra Walters and Alia Nour an opportunity to deliver a win out of the number five and six spots, and the sophomores came through for Mike Baker's team win once again. Walters persevered through a tightly contested matchup with Coastal's Kourtney Kowal, winning a pair of tiebreakers to up her team-best record to 15-1 this season. Nour then continued her roll at number six singles, earning her 12th straight win with a 6-4, 6-2 defeat of Maria Hesketh.
Next up for the Bucs is a trip to Cullowhee, N.C. for an out-of-Conference date with Western Carolina on Friday at 2:00pm. CSU will follow that up with a Saturday match at Shaw to cap the regular-season, before embarking on the Big South Tournament April 19-21 in Asheville, N.C.
Coastal returns home Friday for a non-Conference match against East Carolina at 2:30pm. The Chants will close out the regular-season on Saturday when they face UNC Asheville beginning at 2:00pm.
