Campbell's Guillaume Finishes NCAA Championship With 72
Vaita Guillaume of Campbell University concluded play Thursday in the NCAA men's golf medal play championship by shooting an even-par 72 and finishing in tie for 77th place.
The Big South Conference Player of the Year and co-champion of the NCAA Greensboro Regional made three birdies over the final 18 holes to finish the event at 11-over-par 224 (75-77-72) on the par-71, 7292-yard Riviera Country Club layout.
Thomas Pieters of Illinois won individual honors at five-under-par 208 (69-68-71), three strokes ahead of Julien Brun from TCU (72-72-67--211) and Tyler McCumber of Florida (68-71-72--211).
Guillaume birdied the par-five opening hole and made the turn Thursday at one-over 36. He birdied the par-four 10th and 13th holes.
Alabama (285-287-287--859) finished in first place, two strokes ahead of UCLA (861). The top eight teams in the field will compete in match play over the weekend to crown the NCAA team champion. Big South Conference champion Liberty finished in 10th place at 24-over 876, one stroke out of the top eight schools.
Guillaume concluded his four-year career by winning a school-record five tournament championships and leading the Big South Conference in stroke average (70.7).
