Campbell, Charleston Southern Voted Men's Preseason Favorites

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) - Campbell University and Charleston Southern University have been chosen as the favorites in the Big South Conference's annual men's basketball preseason poll for the 2012-13 season in a vote of the League's Head Coaches and media panel.  The announcement was made today at the Renaissance Suites Hotel in Charlotte, N.C., as part of the 2012-13 Basketball Tip-Off Media Luncheon.

With a record 12 members in 2012-13, the Big South will have divisional play in men's basketball for the first time in Conference history.  Campbell is the preseason favorite to win the North Division with Charleston Southern earning the plaudit for the South Division.

The Camels, which return three starters and seven letterwinners, received 21 of the 29 first-place votes and 166 out of a possible 174 points to capture the division championship.  It is the second time Campbell has been a preseason favorite in the Big South, as the Camels were tabbed first in the 1988-89 poll.  VMI finished second in the North Division voting with 136 points and five first-place votes, ahead of High Point.  The Panthers garnered 103 points and three first-place votes.  Liberty was fourth after collecting 98 points, followed by Radford (fifth, 57 points) and new member Longwood (sixth, 49 points).

Charleston Southern receives its first-ever preseason No. 1 ranking, as the Bucs tallied 157 points and 16 first-place votes to win the South Division in 2012-13.  CSU, which returns four starters and 10 letterwinners this season, was previously ranked as high as second three times in the Big South's annual preseason poll.  Coastal Carolina was second in the South Division voting with 147 points and eight first-place nods, ahead of defending Big South champion UNC Asheville.  The Bulldogs finished third with 130 points and five first-place votes.  Winthrop claimed fourth with 67 points, followed by Gardner-Webb (fifth, 58 points) and Presbyterian College (sixth, 50 points).

Big South men's basketball tips off Friday, Nov. 9 with nine games, while the Conference season begins Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013.  The season culminates with the 2013 VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Basketball Championships the week of March 5-10 at The HTC Center on the campus of Coastal Carolina University.  The combined, one-site men's and women's basketball tournament format features all 23 teams and 21 games in six days, including the crowning of champions on Sunday, March 10.
