Camels Fall to Winthrop in Overtime

Buies Creek, N.C. - In the fourth overtime game the team has played this season, Campbell (7-3-1, 2-2-0) lost to Winthrop (6-4-1, 3-0-1) 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Eakes Athletic Complex. The Fighting Camels outshot the Eagles 14-10, but couldn't convert a score.

Winthrop created the first three shots on goal of the game, but senior goalkeeper Ryann Torrero collected them all.

The Eagles came close to breaking the scoreless game in the 21st minute as Megan Davis put the ball in the back of the net. However, the referee made an offside call that recalled the goal, and the score remained 0-0.

Sophomore Ashley Clark had the first Camel shot on goal in the 39th minute, but Winthrop keeper Amelia Henderson was able to make the stop.

The score remained blank at halftime, 0-0.
In the 60th minute, the Eagles had back-to-back corner kicks. The Camels were able to successfully keep the ball from the goal, as senior Caitlin Schneider headed away the first and Torrero punched the shot from the second out of the box.

The closest Campbell came to scoring in the second half was on two shots in the 78th minute. Clark and sophomore Alexis Prada each had one-on-one takes with keeper Sarah Schippers, but the goalie made two dives to save each try.

Winthrop's final shot in regulation came from a point-blank Allie VandeWater attempt, which Torrero was able to leap up and push over the crossbar to save the score.

Regulation ended scoreless, with Campbell outshooting Winthrop 12-6.
In the overtime period, Campbell took two shots, both from Clark. In the 96th minute, the forward received a pass from sophomore Melissa Messier outside the box, and took it in for a one-on-one with Schippers. Clark drove to the six-yard box, but her shot went wide right.
Winthrop's Krystyna Freda scored the golden goal with 2 minutes to go in the overtime period. VandeWater crossed the ball in from the left side to just inside Campbell's penalty area. Freda took an open shot that sailed into the left side of the goal past Torrero.

Campbell ended the game with 14 shots, five on-goal. Torrero finished with seven saves in 98 minutes of play.

The Fighting Camels are back in action Thursday at 7 p.m. to take on UNC Asheville at Eakes Athletic Complex.

Meanwhile, Winthrop returns to the pitch on Thursday, Oct. 4 as it travels to a Longwood for a 7:00pm match.
