Big South Football Preview: Week 7


Big South Conference football continues this Saturday, Oct. 13 with four games.  Three League contests are on the slate, including No. 11/11 Stony Brook at Coastal Carolina in the Big South's TV "Game of the Week" on ESPN3.  A printable version of this preview is available to the right and below.

VMI KEYDETS (2-3, 1-0 Big South) at CHARLESTON SOUTHERN BUCCANEERS (1-4, 0-1 Big South) • Buccaneer Field • 1:30pm • Big South Network presented by State Farm

THE SERIES:  his is the 12th meeting between the schools.  VMI leads the series, 6-5.

KEYDET KICKS:  The Keydets have won the last two meetings, and are looking for their first Big South road victory since defeating the Buccaneers in Charleston on Oct. 23, 2010 (four-game skid) ... VMI is seeking its second-ever 2-0 start in Big South play (first was in 2005) ... The Keydets rank first in the Big South in pass defense efficiency and third in passing defense ... VMI has allowed the fewest sacks in the Conference with five ... RB JABARI TURNER has scored four of VMI's seven touchdowns this season (2 rushing, 2 receiving).

BUCCANEER BULLETS:  Charleston Southern is looking to snap an eight-game Big South losing streak, as well as a three-game Conference home skid ... The Buccaneers are seeking their first home victory since Nov. 13, 2010 vs. Presbyterian to end a six-game drought ... CSU is playing its first home game in more than a month ... QB MALCOLM DIXON is the team's leading rusher with 146 yards and two touchdowns this season.  RB TREY DORSEY is second with 130 yards ... ELIJAH LEE ranks in the Big South's top 10 in tackles per game (6.4).

THE SERIES:  This is the 10th meeting between the schools.  Liberty leads the series, 5-4.

FLAMES FACTS:  Liberty has won the last three meetings with PC, and is looking to open 2-0 in the Big South for the sixth consecutive season ... The Flames have scored a point in a Big South-record 79 consecutive games, including the last 23-straight in double digits ... QB JOSH WOODRUM is 79-of-102 passing for 931 yards and six TDs in his three starts ... ALDREAKIS ALLEN is second in the Big South with 94.5 rushing yards per game ... WR PAT KELLY (1,688) needs 94 receiving yards to move into 10th on the Big South's all-time list.

BLUE HOSE BANTER:  Presbyterian College is looking to avoid its third 0-2 Big South start in four seasons ... The Blue Hose last defeated Liberty in 2008, a 31-28 home victory on Nov. 1 ... Saturday's game marks the 99th year to the day of PC football ... LB DONELLE WILLIAMS has led the Blue Hose in tackles in every game this season, and his 28 solo stops are tied for first in the Big South ... PC is tied for second in the League with 9 sacks ... RB LANCE BYRD (2,341) needs three rushing yards to move into 10th in Big South history.

THE SERIES:  This is the fifth meeting between the schools.  Stony Brook leads the series, 4-0.

SEAWOLF SCOWLS:  Stony Brook is looking to start 2-0 in Big South play for the fourth-straight year ... The Seawolves have averaged 31.0 points in its four wins over Coastal ... SBU has scored at least 40 points in seven consecutive Big South games ... Stony Brook leads the Big South in scoring offense (41.2) and scoring defense (15.5), as well as total offense (470.8) and total defense (304.2) ... RB MIGUEL MAYSONET needs 112 rushing yards to become the first Big South player with 1,000 through the first seven games of the season.

CHANTICLEER CROWS:  Coastal Carolina is opening Big South play against Stony Brook for the first time, and is looking to start 1-0 in League action for the third-straight year ... Coastal is 7-2 all-time in Big South openers (4-2 at home) and 8-1 when coming off the bye week ... Coastal is second in the Big South in scoring offense (27.0) and passing offense (269.0) ... QB ARAMIS HILLARY has thrown a touchdown pass in seven consecutive games (15 total) ... The Chanticleers are playing their third nationally-ranked opponent of the season.

MidAmerica Nazarene Pioneers (4-1) at GARDNER-WEBB RUNNIN' BULLDOGS (0-5) • Spangler Stadium • 6:00pm • Big South Network presented by State Farm

  • This is the first meeting between the schools, and GWU's third and final first-time opponent this season.
  • Gardner-Webb is off to its first 0-5 start since losing the first eight games of the 1990 season.
  • QB LUCAS BEATTY is the first Gardner-Webb quarterback with a pair of 300-yard passing games since 2008.
  • LB TANNER BURCH continues to lead the Big South in tackles per game with 11.8.
  • RB KENNY LITTLE (1,644) needs 27 rushing yards to move into 19th on the Big South's all-time list.
