Big South Football Preview: Week 6

Big South Conference football resumes this Saturday, Oct. 6 with the start of Conference play.  Three League games are on the slate, including Presbyterian at VMI in the Big South's new TV "Game of the Week" on ESPN3.  A printable version of this preview is available below and to the right.

PRESBYTERIAN COLLEGE BLUE HOSE (2-3, 0-0 Big South) at VMI KEYDETS (1-3, 0-0 Big South) • Foster Stadium • 1:30pm • ESPN3

THE SERIES:  This is the sixth meeting between the schools.  VMI leads the series, 3-2.

BLUE HOSE BANTER:  Presbyterian College is looking to open 1-0 in the Big South for the first time ... PC is also seeking its second-straight win over VMI, as well as its second win in Lexington, as the Blue Hose won the first-ever meeting in 2007 ... PC is looking to win back-to-back road games for the first time since winning three-straight away from home in '07 ... The Blue Hose are 5-7 all-time in games played on October 6 ... MICHAEL RUFF needs 13 yards to become the 12th Big South player with 3,000 career all-purpose yards.

KEYDET KICKS:  VMI is looking to open 1-0 in the Big South for the first time since 2010 and the fourth time overall ... The Keydets are opening Big South play vs. PC for the second time ... The Keydets lead the Big South in punt return average (10.3) as well as pass efficiency defense (110.4).  VMI has allowed the fewest sacks as well (5) ... RB JABARI TURNER has scored three of VMI's five touchdowns this season ... QB ERIC KORDENBROCK ranks 12th in Big South history with 3,239 career passing yards and 310 career completions.

THE SERIES:  This is the 19th meeting between the schools.  Liberty leads the series, 9-8-1.

BULLDOG BITES:  Gardner-Webb is looking to open 1-0 in the Big South for the first time since 2010 and seventh time overall ... GWU is looking to avoid its first 0-5 start since 1990 ... The Runnin' Bulldogs last defeated the Flames in 2006 -- the last time a Big South member won at Liberty ... Gardner-Webb is opening Big South play against Liberty for the fifth time (2-2 record in those contests) ... PK TREVER AUSTIN is one field goal away from cracking the Big South's all-time Top 10 ... LB TANNER BURCH is the Big South's leading tackler.

FLAMES FACTS:  Liberty is looking to open 1-0 in the Big South for the sixth consecutive season and is 7-3 all-time in League lid-lifters ... The Flames have averaged 46.0 points in their last five Big South openers ... Liberty carries a Big South-record 15-game home Conference win streak into Saturday's game.  The Flames are averaging 45.4 points during this stretch while holding League foes to 18.2 points ... Liberty is looking to avoid its first 0-5 start since 1981 ... Three of LU's four losses this year have been by 7 points-or-less (12 points total).

THE SERIES:  This is the fifth meeting between the schools.  Stony Brook leads the series, 3-1.

BUCCANEER BULLETS:  Charleston Southern is looking to open 1-0 in the Big South for the first time since 2008 and the fourth time overall ... The Bucs are opening League play on the road for fourth-straight season and seventh time overall (0-6 record) ... CSU is looking to snap a seven-game losing streak in Big South games ... Charleston Southern ranks second in the Big South in rushing offense ... The Bucs last defeated Stony Brook in 2009, a 30-27 overtime victory ... DB CHARLES JAMES' 11 career interceptions are third in Big South annals.

SEAWOLF SCOWLS:  Stony Brook is looking to open 1-0 in the Big South for the third-straight year and fourth time overall ... The Seawolves carry a six-game Big South win streak into Saturday's game, as well as a nine-game home win streak and 10-game win streak in home Big South games ... RB MIGUEL MAYSONET (3,561) needs 47 rushing yards to break the school record and 73 to become the Big South's all-time leading rusher ... SBU has out-scored its opponents 76-7 in the first quarter and have scored first in all five games this season.

COASTAL CAROLINA CHANTICLEERS (2-3) idle

  • Coastal Carolina is idle this week and returns to action Oct. 13 in its Big South opener against Stony Brook.
  • The Chants' remaining games this season are on natural grass, and CCU is 60-25 all-time on grass fields.
  • QB ARAMIS HILLARY enters the bye week as the Big South's leading passer with 1,272 yards and nine TDs.
  • KR TRE HENDERSON is currently the NCAA's leader in kickoff return average at 39.3 yards.
  • LB QUINN BACKUS enters the bye week as the Conference's leader with 27 solo tackles (54 overall).
