Big South Conference Announces New Staff Additions


CHARLOTTE, N.C. ( - The Big South Conference announces the addition of three new staff members with the hiring of Earl Laing as Administration/Multimedia Assistant, Briana Mayes as Public Relations Assistant and Melissa Estepp as Marketing Assistant for the 2012-13 year. 

Laing will assist with preparation and management of special League events as well as the administrative side of the Conference and aid the Big South Network with subscription information.  He joins the Big South after earning a dual bachelor's degree in economics and business management from Appalachian State University in May 2012.  While at ASU, Laing was manager for the men's basketball team in 2007-08, Director of Outdoor Services at Lineville Golf Club from 2009-12 and volunteered for Special Olympics.  A native of Buies Creek, N.C., he also served as camp counselor and Assistant Director of Operations for Campbell's boy's summer basketball camps from 2007-09.

Mayes will serve as the primary contact for volleyball and softball as well as the media liaison for the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association.  She will also assist with the Conference's digital platforms and men's and women's tennis.  Mayes graduated from the University of North Carolina this past spring with a degree in journalism and mass communications with a concentration in sports communications.  While at North Carolina, Mayes interned in the sports information office where she assisted with the public and media relations for football, men's and women's basketball, rowing, men's and women's golf and softball.  She also served as a multimedia intern for NBC-17, public relations intern for Special Olympics Orange County and as a Sports Marketing Committee Vice Chair for the Carolina Athletic Association from 2011-12.

Estepp, who has been accepted into the Ohio University Sports Administration Program, will be responsible for assisting with the implementation of the Big South's marketing program as well as handling various aspects of its design, ranging from sweepstakes and championships advertising, to on-campus promotions, grass-roots initiatives.  She will also assist with the marketing coordination for the annual Big South 5K Road Race and will help manage the Conference's on-going campus intern program.  As a recent graduate from James Madison University, Estepp majored in sport and recreation management and minored in general business.  While at JMU, she was President of the Student Duke Club, assisting the official fundraising fund of JMU athletics.  Estepp also gained valuable experience interning with Ripken Baseball in the sales department as well as with the Cal Ripken World Series.
