Big South Baseball, Softball To Appear on ESPNU, ESPN3.com
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) - ESPNU, the 24-hour college sports network, will again televise two Big South Conference Spring sports this season, while ESPN3.com will carry the League's baseball and softball championship games for the first time, it was announced today by Big South Commissioner Kyle B. Kallander.
ESPNU will air the Saturday, April 2 Liberty at Coastal Carolina baseball game live from Charles L. Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field at 4:00pm ET, as well as the Liberty at Winthrop softball game live from Winthrop's Terry Field on Sunday, April 3 at 2:00pm ET. ESPNU is televising a regular-season Big South baseball game for the sixth consecutive year, as the network aired two ballgames in 2006 and one contest each of the past four seasons. It also will be the seventh-straight year that Big South baseball will be televised. Big South softball is appearing on ESPNU for the fifth consecutive season.
Each sport's championship game will receive television exposure for the first time in the same season. It will be the first-ever broadcast of the Softball Championship game, which will be Saturday, May 14 at 12:00pm, and just the second time that baseball's championship day will be televised, as Carolinas Sports Entertainment Television (C-SET) aired the first of two championship games in 2005. The 2011 baseball title game will be Saturday, May 28 at 1:00pm.
The April 2 baseball telecast will feature a rematch of last year's championship game between Liberty (preseason No. 2) and Coastal Carolina (four-time defending Conference champion and two-time Super Regional qualifier), while the softball broadcast pits the two teams that played each other for a berth in last year's championship game (which was won by Winthrop). The Flames' baseball squad will be making its second appearance on ESPNU, while the Chanticleers will be showcased on the network for the fourth time during the regular-season. Meanwhile, this will be the first time that ESPNU will televise a Liberty-Winthrop softball showdown.
