Big South Announces Women's Soccer Players of the Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (BigSouthSports.com) - High Point freshman forward Jacky Kessler (Middletown, Md.) has been selected as the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Women's Soccer Attacking Player of the Week, while Liberty goalkeeper Karen Blocker (Bowie, Md.) has earned the Defensive Player of the Week honor for games played Aug. 29-Sept. 4, it was announced today by the League office.

Kessler helped guide High Point to wins over Loyola (Md.) and Towson with two goals and two assists on the weekend.  On Friday against the Greyhounds, Kessler broke a scoreless tie with her first collegiate goal when she pounced on a rebound from a shot off the crossbar.  She then assisted the game-winner late in the second half with a cross to Kelli Joline.  Kessler played a role in both goals against Towson, assisting Joline on the first score and heading in the game-winner off a corner in the 87th minute.

Blocker allowed just three goals in three games last week, finishing with a 0.93 goals against average and a .833 save percentage.  She recorded five saves in a 1-1 tie against Longwood on Monday, Aug. 29.  Blocker then gave up just one goal and made seven saves in a 1-0 loss to Brown, despite the Bears taking 15 shots in the game.  On Sunday, she posted three saves in a 3-1 victory over Valparaiso.

Also nominated for women's soccer Attacking Player of the Week for Week 2: Pirjo Leppikangas (Campbell), Aislinn McIlvenny (Charleston Southern), Megan Curan (Gardner-Webb), Gracie Boswell (Presbyterian), Nicole Johnston (Radford) and Sarah Strand (VMI).

Nominated for Defensive Player of the Week for Week 2: Taylor Brown (Campbell), Alice Blackwell (Presbyterian) and Lisa Lubke (Radford).
