Big South Announces Volleyball Players of the Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C.  (www.BigSouthSports.com) - High Point outside hitter Courtney Johnk (Larkspur, Calif.) has been named the Choice Hotels Big South Volleyball Player of the Week, while Winthrop middle blocker Rachel Lenz (Lancaster, Pa.) was tabbed Freshman of the Week for matches played Sept. 10-16.  In addition, Winthrop's Jennica Mullins (Seminole, Fla.) and Radford's Katelyn Meeks (Richmond, Va.) shared Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Johnk's efficiency played a key role in leading High Point to a 3-1 week as she recorded 47 kills, a .392 hitting average, nine digs and nine blocks.  Her 18 kills and .708 percentage on Tuesday helped High Point defeat Elon for the first time since 2007.  Over the weekend at the Davidson Wildcat Classic, she was named to the All-Tournament team.  She recorded 12 kills in the Panthers' win over Davidson, 10 kills in the match against Green Bay and seven kills in the victory over N.C. Central.  Johnk also contributed on the defensive end with nine blocks and nine digs.

Lenz had standout performance for Winthrop as she was responsible for 42 points as Winthrop went 3-1.  She led the Eagles in kills over the week, totaling 37 with a .305 percentage.  She also aided Winthrop on the defensive side as she recorded nine digs and nine blocks.

Mullins was solid for Winthrop at the net as her impressive 22-block week helped the Eagles go 3-1.  On Friday's match versus Mercer, she broke Winthrop's single-game blocking record (9 blocks) as she put up 12 blocks.  She also had seven blocks against Western Carolina.  Mullins was named to the Winthrop Classic All-Tournament team.

Meeks anchored Radford's back row as the Highlanders went 2-2 last week.  She had an impressive 78-dig week, posting 14 against James Madison, 15 versus George Mason, 22 against Rutgers and a season-high 27 during the Pennsylvania match for a 6.00 average per set.

Also nominated for volleyball Player of the Week for Week 4: Gabriella Horvath (Coastal Carolina), Emily Holte (Gardner-Webb), Caroline Douglas (Liberty), Presley Mabrey (Presbyterian), Rachel Fertitta (Radford), Anna Moore (UNC Asheville) and Jennica Mullins (Winthrop).

Also nominated for volleyball Freshman of the Week for Week 4: Meredith Parrott (Charleston Southern), Gabriella Horvath (Coastal Carolina), Anna Pashkova (Gardner-Webb), Annemarie Chin (High Point), Caroline Douglas (Liberty) and Cheyanne James (Radford).

Also nominated for volleyball Defensive Player of the Week for Week 4: Kindra Bailey (Coastal Carolina), Anna Pashkova (Gardner-Webb), Jamie McDonald (High Point), and Gabrielle Shipe (Liberty).
