Big South Announces Volleyball Players of the Week
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) - Radford's Rachel Wiechecki has been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Player of the Week in volleyball, while High Point's Chelsea Davis was tabbed the CRONS Brand Freshman of the Week. The Highlanders' Rachel Brummitt picked up Defensive Player of the Week honors for matches played Oct. 3-9, the League announced today.
Wiechecki, a freshman from Wilmington, Del., was key in Radford's offensive attack last week as the Highlanders went 2-1. The outside hitter paced Radford with 52 points (4.33/set) as she recorded 43 kills (3.58/set) and hit .276, while recording six service aces. She chipped in defensively with 24 digs and six total blocks. She started the week off strong, hitting .522 (13 kills, one error) with six digs, two blocks and three aces in a non-conference win over North Carolina A&T. She upped her performance in a big road win at Campbell, recording a double-double with a career and match-best 17 kills (seven in the fourth set) to go along with 10 digs, two blocks and two aces as she posted a match-high 20 points. She concluded the week with a 13-kill, eight-dig performance at High Point. She added two more blocks and another ace.
Davis, an outside hitter from Yadkinville, N.C., posted 20 kills, 20 digs, four blocks, three aces and a .294 attack percentage in HPU's two wins this weekend. She posted 10 kills on .526 hitting in the win over Liberty, adding six digs, two blocks and one ace. She got HPU off to a hot start in the match with four kills on eight swings in the first set and did not make a hitting error in the match. She followed it up with a double-double against the Highlanders, recording 10 kills, 14 digs, two blocks, two aces and two assists. Her final kill of the weekend sealed the win over Radford, lifting HPU to the 15-9 win in the fifth set.
Brummitt, a freshman from Plano, Texas, was a stalwart defensively for the Highlanders last week. She posted 76 digs (6.33 per set) which included her League-best third 30-dig performance of the season with 34 at High Point on Oct. 8. She recorded six-plus digs in nine of 12 games, seven of which she posted seven or better. In her 34-dig effort at High Point, she posted eight digs in sets two and four, along with seven more in the fifth. After registering 14 digs in a sweep of North Carolina A&T, she played a big role in the Highlanders' 3-1 win at Campbell with 28 digs, 27 coming in the final three sets, including 11 in set two and nine more in set three. She also chipped in with a little offense last week, recording two kills and six service aces.
