Big South Announces Volleyball Players of the Week


CHARLOTTE, N.C. ( - Winthrop's Becca Toor has been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Player of the Week in volleyball, while teammate Jennica Mullins was tabbed the Freshman of the Week.  Fellow Radford's Rachel Brummitt picked up Defensive Player of the Week honors for matches played during the opening weekend of the season, the League announced today.

Toor, a senior from Rotonda West, Fla., put away 45 kills, averaged .398 at the net and posted 13 blocks to lead her Eagles to a 3-0 record on the week to claim the Winthrop Classic title.  After posting nine kills, three blocks and three digs in the 3-1 win over UNC Wilmington on Aug. 26, the middle hitter got it going with 13 kills on .579 hitting with three digs and a block as Winthrop downed Mercer 3-0 on Aug. 27.  She finished out the tournament with 23 kills, a .452 hitting percentage, nine blocks and one dig to lead Winthrop to the 3-2 win over Davidson.  For her efforts the Big South Preseason Player of the Year was named the Winthrop Classic MVP.

Mullins, a middle blocker from Seminole, Fla., got her collegiate career started in fine form as she finished with 26 kills on .315 hitting to go along with 16 blocks in Winthrop's three wins over the weekend.  She got her weekend started with 10 kills, a .368 average at the net and six blocks in Winthrop's season-opening win over the Seahawks.  The next day in the win over Mercer, Mullins turned away six Bear attacks and chipped in four kills and one dig.  Against Davidson, she found the floor for 12 kills and a .292 hitting percentage, as well as four blocks and a dig.  Mullins was named to the Winthrop Classic All-Tournament Team for her play in the three-game span.

Brummitt, a freshman Libero from Plano, Texas, recorded 54 digs and 5.40 digs per set for the Highlanders over the weekend.  She highlighted her weekend with a career-high 37 digs, including two sets with 10 digs against Manhattan on Aug. 27.  Against Hofstra on Aug. 26, Brummitt posted a match-high 17 digs for Radford.

Also nominated for volleyball Freshman of the Week for Week 1: Jessica Groen (Campbell), Lian Bernett (Coastal Carolina), Heather Feldman (Gardner-Webb), Chelsea Davis (High Point), Ansley Gebben (Liberty) and Christine Beckham (Radford).

Also nominated for volleyball Defensive Player of the Week for Week 1:  Lindsay Gill (Coastal Carolina), Breanna Holliday (High Point), Loren Thomas (Liberty) and Catherine Brusie (Winthrop).
