Big South Announces Track & Field Weekly Awards


CHARLOTTE, N.C. ( - Charleston Southern's Javon Young has been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men's Track Athlete of the Week, while Mulern Jean of  Charleston Southern earned the Big South Women's Track Athlete of the Week.  Meanwhile, Gardner-Webb's Carson Sears and Melinda Bendik of Liberty were tabbed the Men's and Women's Field Athletes of the week, respectively, the League announced today.

Young, a senior from Swainsboro, Ga., posted a school record time of 20.96 in the 200-meter event to garner All-American honors at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field National Championship over the weekend.  He finished second in his preliminary heat and took seventh in the finals.

Jean, a freshman from Pompano Beach, Fla., took home the gold at the Palmetto Classic with a time of 14.10 in the 100-meter hurdles.  Her time set the Charleston Southern standard in the event.

Sears, a sophomore from Suwannee, Ga., posted a school-record throw of 61.97 meters in the hammer throw at the Coastal Carolina Invitational over the weekend.  He finished second overall in the event.

Bendik, a red-shirt senior from Odessa, Texas, notched a school-record mark of 192' 2" in the hammer throw at the Coastal Carolina Invitational.  Her throw was good for first-place overall in the event.

Men's Track Honorable Mentions:
Tyler Long, Campbell - Placed third in the 100-meter event at UNC Wilmington with a time of 10.77.

Women's Track Honorable Mentions:
Lynett Akai, Campbell - Finished third in the 400 meters at UNC Wilmington with a time of 56.80.

Men's Field Honorable Mentions:
Michael Dietzler, Coastal Carolina - Took first in the javelin at the Coastal Carolina Invitational with a throw of 60.22 meters.

Women's Field Honorable Mentions:
Danielle England, Coastal Carolina - Notched a first-place throw in the javelin with a mark of 43.27 meters at the Coastal Carolina Invitational.
Sara Heard, Gardner-Webb - Placed third in the high jump at the Coastal Carolina Invitational with a jump of 1.67 meters.
