Big South Announces Track & Field Athletes of the Week

- Coastal Carolina's shuttle hurdle relay team has been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men's Track Athlete of the Week, while Lynettet Akai of Campbell earned the Big South Women's Track Athlete of the Week.  Meanwhile, Coastal Carolina's Jason Flanagan was tabbed the Men's Field Athlete of the Week, with Melinda Bendik of Liberty earning the Women's Field Athlete of the Week honor, the League announced today.

Shane Norris, Tre'von Gee, Russell Kanner and Carrington Fernadors clocked in at 59.50 in the unique event at the Penn Relays over the weekend.  The quartet's time was good for fourth-place overall in the competitive field.

Flanagan, a senior from Philadelphia, Pa., claimed third in one of the toughest fields in the country in the javelin at the Penn Relays.  Competing in front of his hometown crowd, Flanagan unleashed a throw of 234'.

Akai, a freshman from Newburgh, Ind., took home first-place in the 400-meter event at the Camels' home meet over the weekend.  She turned in a personal-best time of 56.30 in the event.

Bendik, a red-shirt senior from Odessa, Texas, turned in a school-record throw of 197' 10" in the hammer throw at the Radford Invitational.  Her mark was good for first-place overall in the event.

Men's Track Honorable Mentions:
Caleb Edmonds, Liberty - Finished second in the 5K at the Penn Relays with a time of 14:21.15.
Brett Olinger, Radford - Posted the second-fastest 400-meter hurdles time in Radford history as he finished second at the Highlander Invitational with a time of 52.68.
Morgan Timeny, Campbell - Claimed first-place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:23.71.

Men's Field Honorable Mentions:
Robert Brunson, Campbell - Claimed first-placed in the triple jump with a leap of 13.95 meters.

Women's Field Honorable Mentions:
Jessica Dunston, Campbell - Turned in the top overall mark in the hammer throw with a throw of 51.16 meters.
