Big South Announces Track & Field Athletes of the Week



CHARLOTTE, N.C. ( - High Point's Jacob Smith has been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men's Track Athlete of the Week, while Erica Peake of Coastal Carolina earned the Big South Women's Track Athlete of the Week.  Meanwhile, Charleston Southern's Lavon Allen was tabbed the Men's Field Athlete of the Week, with Mychelle Cummings of Liberty earning the Women's Field Athlete of the Week honor, the League announced today.

Smith, a junior from Brackville, Ontario, posted a career-best and Conference-leading 5K time of 14:01.61 at the William & Mary Invitational over the weekend.  He finished eighth overall in the event.

Peake, a junior from Spartanburg, S.C., posted three top 10 finishes at the Auburn Invitational over the weekend.  Her best finish came in the 200-meter event as she won her heat and placed third overall with a personal-best time of 23.73.  She also placed seventh overall in the 100-meter event with a time of 11.78.  Peake closed the meet out by helping her 4x100 meter relay squad post their best time this season as they clocked in at 46.73 to place ninth in the event.

Allen, a senior from Atlanta, Ga., placed second at the Florida Relays with a long jump mark of 7.61 meters.

Cummings, a freshman from Madison, Tenn., placed second overall in the discus at the Liberty Invitational with a school-record throw of 167'.  She won the shot put with a Conference-best throw 47' 11" to win the event by three feet.  In the hammer throw, Cummings posted a personal-best throw of 156' 10" to place ninth overall.

Men's Track Honorable Mentions:
Evan Emery, High Point - Posted an Olympic "B" standard time of 10.28 to finish fifth overall at the Florida Relays.

Men's Field Honorable Mentions:
Jason Flanagan, Coastal Carolina - Placed first in the javelin at the Auburn Invitational with a mark of 236' 6".
Mark Britton, Winthrop - The freshman finished sixth in the discus at the Flordia Relays with throw of 48.75.

Women's Track Honorable Mentions:
Mariah Collins, Campbell - Recorded a school-record time of 14.53 to placed fourth overall in the 100-meter hurdles at the Duke Invitational.

Women's Field Honorable Mentions:
Shantelle Patterson, Coastal Carolina- Was the top collegiate finisher in the hammer throw with a mark of 185' 6.0".  She placed third overall in the event.  She also placed 15th in the shot put with a throw of 40' 0.75".
