Big South Announces Softball Players of the Week
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) - Coastal Carolina senior Chelsea Pineda (Coolidge, Ariz.) has been selected as the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Softball Player of the Week, while Gardner-Webb's Cindy Boomhower (Walhalla, S.C.) has received The Crons Brand Pitcher of the Week honor for games played April 9-15, it was announced today by the Conference office.
Pineda batted .400 with four hits, eight RBI, two home runs and two runs in 10 at-bats last week to lead the Chanticleers to a 2-2 record. Against Charleston Southern on April 10, she hit her first triple of the season, scoring two runners to pull the Chanticleers within one run of the Buccaneers. She ended the game with one hit and two RBI in three at-bats, while drawing one walk. During the 5-3 win against Liberty, Pineda hit her first grand slam of the season that gave the Chants the go-ahead lead at 5-2. Pineda finished the game with two hits, four RBI and one run in three at-bats. She picked up her second home run of the day in game two, scoring two RBI in the 7-2 victory over the Flames. During Coastal's final game against Liberty, Pineda tied her season-high in putouts with 10. She finished the week with a 1.200 slugging percentage and a .500 on-base percentage. Pineda also recorded 22 putouts and four assists over the four-game stretch.
Boomhower went 2-0 with a save in 13.2 innings pitched last week as Gardner-Webb went 3-2. In Gardner-Webb's 2-0 win over Charlotte, Boomhower pitched a scoreless seventh to earn her third save of the year. In a 5-2 come-from-behind win over Winthrop in game two on April 14, Boomhower entered the game in the second inning with a 2-0 deficit. The redshirt-senior held the Lady Eagles scoreless over the next 5.2 innings of play, scattering only four hits, while striking out two to earn the win. On Sunday, Boomhower again came out of the bullpen to earn the win, as she pitched 3.2 innings of scoreless ball to help the Runnin' Bulldogs earn the 3-2 win. Boomhower's line last week: 4 APP., 2-0, 1 Sv., 1.02 ERA, 13.2 IP, 14 H, 2 R/ER, 2 BB, 6 SO.
