Big South Announces Softball Players of the Week
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) - Winthrop junior Chelsey Schoenfeldt (Golden Lake, Ontario) has been selected as the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Softball Player of the Week, while Charleston Southern's Morgan Dowdy (Pleasanton, Calif.) has received The Crons Brand Pitcher of the Week honor for games played the opening weekend of the 2012 softball season, it was announced today by the Conference office. Schoenfeldt batted .615 (8-for-13) with a .643 on-base percentage, four RBI and eight hits to help Winthrop to a 2-2 record. The junior marked a .846 slugging percentage on the weekend and recorded two hits in every game, including a game-winning two-run home run in the eighth inning for a 3-1 win over Tennessee State. In a 3-1 win over Cleveland State on Feb. 10, Schoenfeldt put runners at the corners with a one-out single that set-up an insurance run. On Saturday vs. Western Kentucky and South Carolina, she was 4-for-7 with two RBI.
Dowdy went 2-0 in two starts in the Palmetto State Showdown as Charleston Southern picked up three wins against Furman last weekend. The junior allowed two unearned runs in the first inning of game one against Furman on Feb. 10, but held the Paladins scoreless the rest of the way as she earned the first win of the season. She got the ball again in the second game of the doubleheader on Saturday, tossing 3.0 shutout frames in securing the 12-4 win. In the last game, Dowdy gave up just three hits and a walk, and struck out a batter. Dowdy's line last week: 2-0, 0.00 ERA, 10.0 IP, 14 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO, .318 opponents' batting average.
