Big South Announces Football Preseason All-Conference Honors
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) - Liberty redshirt-senior quarterback Mike Brown (Charlottesville, Va.) and Coastal Carolina junior linebacker Andrae Jacobs (Tabor City, N.C.) have been voted the Big South Conference's 2011 Preseason Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, respectively, by the League's head football coaches and media panel, it was announced today at the Big South Football Media Day Kickoff Luncheon at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Charlotte, N.C.
Brown, who received 15 of the 18 first-place votes and 33 total points, was the 2010 Big South Offensive Player of the Year -- the second back-to-back winner following a record-setting season in his first year as the Flames' starting quarterback. Brown led the nation in total offense in 2010 with a Big South single-season record 346.4 yards per game, finishing the season with 3,810. He amassed 300 yards of offense in a game seven times last season, including three games over 400 -- a Conference record for a season and a career. Brown was the first quarterback in League history to pass for at least 200 yards in every game during the season and reached 300 yards passing in three contests in 2010. A finalist for the Walter Payton Award, Brown surpassed 100 yards rushing and 200 yards passing in a game twice last year, as well as becoming the first Big South quarterback to gain 150 yards on the ground (160) and 300 yards in the air (334) in the same game. He finished the year 223-of-351 passing for 2,956 yards (second-most in a season in League history) and 23 touchdowns (tied for second). He threw at least three touchdowns in a game four times -- including in a record three consecutive games.
Brown, who has already been named one of 20 candidates for the 2011 Walter Payton Award and has been tabbed a preseason All-American by The Sports Network, Phil Steele's College Football Preview and Consensus Draft Services, rushed for 854 yards and nine touchdowns in 2010, the second-highest single-season rushing total for a quarterback in Conference annals. He is the only player in Big South history with 1,000 career rushing (1,483), passing (3,408) and receiving (1,049) yards and has been a part of Liberty's last three Big South football championships.
Jacobs, who has already been named a 2011 preseason All-American by Phil Steele's College Football Preview and Lindy's, received nine of 18 first-place votes and 22 points to claim the defensive honor. Tabbed the 2010 Big South Defensive Player of the Year - the first Coastal Carolina player to be voted as the Conference's postseason honoree, Jacobs finished the season second in the Big South with a career-high 104 tackles (8.7 per game), having ranked first (eight weeks) and second (three weeks) in the Conference in tackles all season. He also recorded 12.0 tackles-for-loss (tied for third in the Big South) and two sacks on the year. Jacobs tallied 50 solo stops and 54 assisted tackles, and his combined total of 104 was third-most on Coastal's season top 10 list as well as 24 more than the next closest player on the team.
Jacobs posted five double-digit tackle games last season, including a career-high 14 at then-No. 11 Richmond and 13 stops (nine solo) against Georgia Southern. Jacobs had a tackle-for-loss in 10 of 12 games played in 2010, including a string of seven consecutive games with a stop behind the line. His play helped Coastal lead the League and rank 16th nationally in tackles-for-loss, as well as finishing first in scoring defense in Conference games en route to a share of the Big South title.
Stony Brook running back Brock Jackolski finished second in the offensive voting with 13 points (one first-place vote), while Gardner-Webb wide receiver James Perry III was third with eight points (two first-place votes). On defense, Liberty defensive tackle Asa Chapman was second to Jacobs with 15 points (four first-place votes), while VMI linebacker A.J. Gross was third with 10 points (four first-place votes).
Brown and Jacobs were also voted to the preseason All-Conference team. The preseason team is comprised of 12 offensive players, 12 defensive players and five special teams selections, plus any ties.
