Big South Announces Football Players of the Week
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) - Liberty running back Aldreakis Allen (Colbert, Ga.) has been named the Choice Hotels Big South Football Offensive Player of the Week, while Flames' linebacker Nick Sigmon (Roanoke, Va.) has been selected as Defensive Player of the Week for games played the 10th week of the regular-season. Coastal Carolina defensive tackle Johnny Hartsfield (St. Petersburg, Fla.) is the Special Teams Player of the Week, and Chanticleers' quarterback Alex Ross (Alpharetta, Ga.) is The Crons Brand Freshman of the Week.
Allen rushed 19 times for 179 yards and three touchdowns in the Flames' 26-12 win over Charleston Southern. He scored the game's first touchdown on a 35-yard scamper in the first quarter, and broke through for a 56-yard scoring run in the second quarter to give Liberty a 13-6 lead. Allen's third touchdown run was a 30-yarder in the third quarter that put the game out of reach. He averaged 9.4 yards per carry en route to the second-highest rushing total of his career.
Sigmon recorded eight tackles, including six solo, with four stops behind the line of scrimmage for minus-13 yards against the Buccaneers. It was his second-highest tackle total of the year and a career-best in tackles-for-loss. Sigmon's first TFL was a four-yard loss on a 3rd-and-2 play, while his second forced a third down. He added two TFL on first down situations to create two 2nd-and-long plays for the Bucs.
Hartsfield blocked Gardner-Webb's second PAT attempt in the first quarter that kept the Chanticleers within seven points at the time and would prove key as Coastal Carolina grabbed a late 34-33 lead in the third quarter. Hartsfield added three tackles and a pass break-up on defense.
Ross, a redshirt-freshman making his first career start for the injured Aramis Hillary, was 16-of-30 passing for 342 yards and three touchdowns in Coastal's 55-33 victory at Gardner-Webb. He added 62 rushing yards to finish with a Big South freshman-record 404 yards of offense. Ross completed the longest and eighth-longest touchdown passes in Coastal history, connecting on an 81-yard pass play with Niccolo Mastromatteo in the third quarter, just after a 60-yard hook-up with DeMario Bennett late in the second quarter.
Also nominated for Offensive Player of the Week: Niccolo Mastromatteo (Coastal Carolina), Kevin Norrell (Stony Brook).
Also nominated for Defensive Player of the Week: Quinn Backus (Coastal Carolina).
