Big South Announces Date for 3rd Annual 5K Road Race


CHARLOTTE, N.C. ( - The Big South Conference announced today its 3rd annual 5K Road Race is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 20 at 8:00am at the Blakeney Shopping Center in South Charlotte, and will coincide with the 6th annual Blakeney Shopping Center Boo! Bash starting at 10 am that morning.

The Big South 5K will again serve as a fundraising opportunity for middle school athletics programs in the Charlotte area.  Since its inception in 2010, this event has been one of the top 5K races in Charlotte and has raised more than $22,000 for middle school athletic programs in Mecklenburg and Union counties.  Close to 1,000 registrants took part in last year's 5K run and more than 50 local businesses supported the event in 2011.  In the past two years, approximately 50 schools have been designated by participants as beneficiaries for a percentage of registration fees from the race.

Online registration will open shortly at the official race website, The entry fee is $20 for pre-registered runners by Sept. 30 and includes an official race t-shirt, with the rate increasing to $25 after Sept. 30. Runners can also sign up on race day starting at 7:00am.  Individuals who are unable to participate can still support the event and a specific school by signing up as a "phantom runner" for $20.  All registered "phantom runners" will receive a race t-shirt.  The Big South 5K Road Race will again feature a finish line party of awards, music, food, games, vendors and giveaways leading up to the start of Boo! Bash.
